    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

Official announcement: at 4am CST November 22, 2017 ISIS is defeated militarily.

Iraqi Prime Minister announces, one day after his Syrian counter-part did the same in his country, ISIS no longer exists as a viable military organization. US officials on the ground in Syria and Iraq echo that contention. ISIS has been crushed.

In the summer of 2014 ISIS suddenly appeared with surprising military capability, and swept from their strongholds in Syria into Iraq. Then president, barry obummer, brushed them off as nothing more than a "JV team." But, the core of ISIS were battle-hardened veterans of Saddam Hussein's once powerful Iraqi Army. When the US invaded Iraq in 2002 and defeated Hussein, a good portion of his military escaped into what was, at that time, a welcoming Syria. Of course, they also transported a large portion of Hussein's WMDs into Syria. The early ISIS army was formidable. They had the latest equipment and knew how to use it. They were also organized into militarily efficient battalions and had capable officers. In 2014 a typical ISIS battalion operated as a "legion" or as a corps operates in modern armies. They had all aspects needed: infantry, artillery, armor, and logistics and supply. Each battalion numbered about 5,000 men total. Each battalion could operate on its own and ISIS smartly deployed these professional battalions into key regions, and were augmented by groups, militias, of volunteer loonies usually organized into 500-man units. This is why two such battalions (10,000 men) crushed a hastily created Iraqi army of 60,000 early in the war. ISIS was NOT some "JV team" and only a roaring moron would have thought so.

But...such veterans and all that good equipment could not be easily replaced. So, over time, ISIS suffered losses and the quality of their army declined. They lost capable officers in battle, and could not replace such experience. It was the Kurds who first, in the fall of 2014, managed to fight one of these battalions to a stand-still. Dug in along a strong defensive position and refusing to give up!! the Kurds stood their ground. Then, when the US (secretly) supported those Kurds with air power, ISIS was driven back. This was ISIS' "Battle of Midway." It was the first time they tasted defeat on the battlefield after crushing everything in its path and gobbling up thousands of square miles of territory.

So, 3 1/2 years later, about the usual tenure of such evil armies, ISIS has been defeated as a viable military. In total 67 nations participated in the effort. But, by far, the US, Russia, Turkey, and Iran were the biggest foreign contributors. Iran is now setting up shop in Syria, presently with Assad's approval. This is NOT over....yet.

Finally, here's a tip of the hat to the Kurds. They started fighting for their very existence using makeshift and captured equipment. Then president, barry obummer, refused to support them. Turkey was putting too much diplomatic pressure on that weasel for him to support the Kurds. Fortunately, obummer okayed a military measure that OUR GUYS took as permission to actually support the Kurds. It was a stretch to apply the order that way, but our military advisors on the ground in Iraq knew the Kurds needed our support, and also knew only the Kurds had the will to defeat ISIS.

The remnants of ISIS remain scattered in the desert region along the Syria-Iraq border, and mop up operations will continue for months. But there is no command structure left. ISIS also remains a threat across the world as isolated pockets of terrorists.

Now...the new conflict begins: with Iran. And, what will happen to the Kurds?

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

Over 11,000 civilians confirmed killed in the Battle of Mosul (Iraq). Months after ISIS' defeat, officials are still investigating and sorting through the wreckage and carnage, in Mosul, and other places where the war on ISIS was fought. CBS news investigative reporter (December 20, 2017) on the ground in Mosul has been gathering information. An ISIS apologist news reporter from Pakistan stated that nearly 3,000 of those deaths were the direct result of US-led air strikes. Iraqi Army investigators say there is no way to determine exactly how many civilians were killed by which side.

The former mayor of Mosul, summed it up, "If not for the criminal invasion of ISIS there would be zero civilian casualties. They are the cause."

Mosul was a city of about 1 million people prior to the ISIS invasion. It is in shambles now. The rotting heads of defeated ISIS soldiers can still be found on stakes in isolated parts of the city. Iraqi Army officials stated that the local populace suffered such horrid atrocities at the hands of ISIS, it brings a measure of solace to see many of their former tormentors' heads on stakes. Despite protests, demanding their removal by some international relief organizations, the Iraqi Army maintains they will be removed only when the local people want them gone.

Meanwhile, the remnants of ISIS continue terrorist attacks. A bomb killed 10 people at a Mosul market this week, and ISIS claimed responsibility.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

Turkey launched a military operation against the Kurds holding the border city of Arin. The Turks were supported by Syrian troops, who have been armed and trained by the Russians. The Turks used air support and attacked the city from three directions.

    They lost....

That's right, the Kurds kicked their butts and still hold Arin. Now, Turkey is vowing to strike again, and this time they are committing two full divisions (40,000 troops). Because of the logistics involved, it will probably be the end of the week before the Turks are ready to try again.

US officials are trying to negotiate a cease-fire and have this end in some peaceful way. But, at some point, failing that, the US will either stand by the Kurds, and that means the threat of war with a supposed-ally, (NATO) Turkey. Or, abandoning the Kurds to their fate. Turkey desperately wants to prevent the founding of a Kurdish independent nation, due to the large ethnically Kurdish minority population who are Turkish citizens. They fear a mass exodus of Kurds out of Turkey to this new country. Those Kurds in Arin are Syrian Kurds, who have lived their whole lives as Syrian citizens. Iraq has already launched military operations against the Kurds there, and for the same reason.

I support an independent Kurdland (whatever it might be called) and it should encompass parts of what is now Syria and Iraq.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

The Kurds mounted an offensive and drove Turkish forces away from Afrin. It was a surprise night attack and the Turks did well to escape with most of their equipment.

Syrian government sources lodged a complaint against Turkey for it's illegal military incursion into Syria and stated Turk airstrikes killed dozens of non-Kurd Syrian civilians. A Syrian official went as far as to call out the Turks over their claim they were just fighting terrorists in Afrin.

Paraphrasing, the Syrian official said: Bullshit! Turkey claims there are still ISIS forces in Afrin!? Yeah, right! Not when there are Kurdish forces there. Everyone knows where there are Kurds ALL ISIS forces are DEAD!!!

Then Turkey said, well, they are fighting the YPG, which is there label for what Turkey says is a Kurd terrorist group. The YPG is a more "radical" organization of the Kurdish militia which is supporting the Kurdish minority in Turkey, and there has been violence in the past, including some bombings of government installations in Turkey. It's an issue the US should be heavily involved in diplomatically, but heretofore, no US administration has wanted to touch it.

Sec. of State Rex Tillerson has been burning up the phone lines the past couple of days trying to get Turkey to back off its military operations in Syria, and come to the negotiating table. Trump issued some lame statement about hoping Turkey will curtail its military operations in Syria. Maybe Trump is keeping a low profile on this matter allowing Tillerson to do the heavy lifting in the talks. Okay...fine. But since Trump has never been one to mince words on other issues, I expect him to be a little more firm in his public statements re: the Kurds. I know this is a dicey situation. With all of its faults Turkey is a member of NATO, with the second largest military in it. The rest of NATO, the mostly pansy European nations, are afraid to upset the Turks.

In the meantime, the Turks learned a lesson, the Kurds are not a military you can just brush aside. The Turks got embarrassed in Afrin. They sent a sizable ground force, supported by air power, and got skunked. And to make matters worse, after the Turks pulled back a few miles in a defensive position awaiting reinforcements, the Kurds launched an attack and routed the Turks, chasing them back across the border.

Let us hope Turkey keeps its military on its side of the border.

The Turks behind their new radical Islamic President are over playing their cards. Interesting in that one of the latest interpretations of the Biblical failed Gog and Magog war (potential pre-tribulation war) says that it is Turkey and not Russia (as most scholars have stated with GOG being Putin/Russia) that attacks Israel from the immediate north with the Lord of Host defeating them on the mountains of Israel (the Golan heights probably).

    WIKI source

"Gog and Magog (/ɡɒɡ/; /ˈmeɪɡɒɡ/; Hebrew: גּוֹג וּמָגוֹגGog u-Magog) in the Hebrew Bible may be individuals, peoples, or lands; a prophesied enemy nation of God's people according to the Book of Ezekiel, and according to Genesis, one of the nations descended from Japheth, son of Noah.
The Gog prophecy is meant to be fulfilled at the approach of what is called the "end of days", but not necessarily the end of the world. Jewish eschatology viewed Gog and Magog as enemies to be defeated by the Messiah, which will usher in the age of the Messiah. Christianity's interpretation is more starkly apocalyptic: making Gog and Magog allies of Satan against God at the end of the millennium, as can be read in the Book of Revelation.

Gog and Magog appear in the Quran as Yajuj and Majuj (Arabic: يأجوج ومأجوجYaʾjūj wa-Maʾjūj), adversaries of Dhul-Qarnayn, a legendary figure derived from Alexander the Great. Muslim geographers identified them at first with Turkic tribes from Central Asia and later with the Mongols. In modern times they remain associated with apocalyptic thinking, especially in the United States and the Muslim world."

The HOLY BIBLE: THE BEST SOURCE!!

Ezekiel 38-39 New King James Version (NKJV)

    Gog and Allies Attack Israel

38 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh,[a] Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, 3 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. 5 Persia, Ethiopia,[b] and Libya[c] are with them, all of them withshield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.
7 “Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. 8 After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword andgathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. 9 You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”
10 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day it shall come to pass that thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will make an evil plan: 11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’— 12 to take plunder and to take booty, to stretch out your hand against the waste places that are again inhabited, and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land. 13 Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’”’
14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day when My people Israel dwell safely, will you not know it? 15 Then you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army. 16 You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes.” 17 Thus says the Lord God: “Are you he of whom I have spoken in former days by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years in those days that I would bring you against them?

    Judgment on Gog

18 “And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord God, “that My fury will show in My face. 19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, 20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’ 21 I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains,” says the Lord God. “Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23 Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.”’

    Gog’s Armies Destroyed

39 “And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh,[d] Meshech, and Tubal; 2 and I will turn you around and lead you on, bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. 3 Then I will knock the bow out of your left hand, and cause the arrows to fall out of your right hand. 4 You shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who arewith you; I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. 5 You shall fall on the open field; for I have spoken,” says the Lord God. 6 “And I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in security in the coastlands. Then they shall know that I am the Lord. 7 So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them profane My holy name anymore. Then the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. 8 Surely it is coming, and it shall be done,” says the Lord God. “This is the day of which I have spoken.
9 “Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the javelins and spears; and they will make fires with them for seven years. 10 They will not take wood from the field nor cut down any from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them,” says the Lord God.

    The Burial of Gog

11 “It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travelers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of Hamon Gog.[e] 12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order to cleanse the land. 13 Indeed all the people of the land will be burying, and they will gain renown for it on the day that I am glorified,” says the Lord God. 14 “They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of a search party,[f] to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search. 15 The search party will pass through the land; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall set up a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog. 16 The name of the city will also be Hamonah. Thus they shall cleanse the land.”’

    A Triumphant Festival

17 “And as for you, son of man, thus says the Lord God, ‘Speak to every sort of bird and to every beast of the field:
    “Assemble yourselves and come;
Gather together from all sides to My sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you,
A great sacrificial meal on the mountains of Israel,
That you may eat flesh and drink blood.
18 You shall eat the flesh of the mighty,
Drink the blood of the princes of the earth,
    Of rams and lambs,
    Of goats and bulls,
All of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 You shall eat fat till you are full,
And drink blood till you are drunk,
    At My sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you.
20 You shall be filled at My table
    With horses and riders,
    With mighty men
And with all the men of war,” says the Lord God.

Tidbit of news: Turkey has asked the US to stop arming/supplying the YPG. Apparently our initial response, from the State Department, is we will comply with request.

I think that's unfortunate, unless the rest of the Kurds separate themselves from the YPG. I hope the US takes the lead in talks among all the parties. There is no reason for the Turks and the Kurds to be at odds with each other. This can be worked out peacefully.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

    Latest:

Turkey has yet to mount their big offensive to capture Afrin. The Kurds have moved reinforcements into the city and are determined to hold it. The Turks have already suffered a humiliating defeat trying, and know they will get their butts kicked again.

The Kurds captured two of the worst ISIS azzholes....responsible for thousands of murders, including many of the beheadings...and turned them over to US officials. The two azzholes are heading to GITMO.

Our attack against Assad's forces is just a preview of coming attractions. This was not the first time US aircraft wiped out Assad's troops. Happened last year when a convoy of Assad's troops refused to heed warnings and continued straight toward US troops and our allies during the campaign against ISIS in eastern Syria. Like last time, Assad's spox and the Ruskies screamed about it and issued warnings of retaliation. But, like last time, appears Assad and the Ruskies are all hot air.

Still, things are bound to get worse before they get better. Now that ISIS has been defeated, we have three coalitions, with well-equipped armies, all crowded together in Syria, and parts of Iraq and none of them are willing to unilaterally disarm and go home. Only a "winner take all" war will settle this.

Might have to retire this thread in favor of a new one: "The Civil War in Syria" or "The Beginning of World War III" or some such title.

As expected Iran will not get out of Syria-Iraq on their own volition. They'll have to be kicked out. The Ruskies and Turks have teamed up as "uneasy" allies and are refusing to get out as well. The Kurds are fortunate, as is the whole world, we have a real president right now who will not back down to the evil forces there. We all HOPE some kind of diplomatic solution can be found to avoid a wider war. But, knowing who the players are, how realistic is that?

The US, Kurds, and Israel will have to bind tightly together....together with those elements in Syria and Iraq who long for peace, in a democratic society (and there are people like that there), and hunker down. If the US commits....not half-ass, but truly commits...militarily, with allies like the hard-fighting Kurds and Israelis, we will prevail. IF.....

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

    "Because....they would be utterly destroyed."

A NATO officer was asked, with the Russians, Assad's Syrian Government forces, and the Iranian militias all wanting the US out of Syria, and that they together have close to 140,000 troops, supported by 24 advanced Russian fighter-bombers, Asad's own air force of 80 fighters and 15 attack helicopters, 100's of pieces of artillery, and 40 of the latest Russian-built tanks, and the fact the US has a grand total of 2,000 troops, in support of 15,000 Kurds in northeast Syria, why hasn't the "Putin-Assad Coalition" attacked?

    Answer above....

Two squadrons of the best fighter in the world, and it's not even close, of F-22s based nearby, no coalition aircraft would survive more than a few minutes. Also, Trump has already made it VERY clear, as he has demonstrated, the US will retaliate with cruise missiles, destroying Assad's and the Iranian bases in Syria. Then, caught out in the open, in the desert, the coalition forces of vehicles and troops would be easy targets for F-16s and Navy jets launched from carriers in the Arabian Sea, and a task force in the Mediterranean Sea.

The US has secured the large oil fields in Syria, and we have no intention of giving them up anytime soon.

    Mistake

that's what I say about Trump's proposed "soon, very soon" withdrawal of US troops from Syria. Unlike the looney lefties here, and elsewhere, I think for myself and call a spade, a spade. So, while I mostly support Trump's foreign policy decisions, I have to go on record as stating this would be a mistake. At least, anytime soon. YES! I hope we can get our guys out of Syria some day. Just, not yet.

Hopefully his new advisor, the very hawkish John Bolton, will talk him out of this move. It's the exact mistake obummer made getting us out of Iraq when he did. And that led to the rise of ISIS and a 4-year war we just won on the battlefield. Our presence in Syria, the way we are situated, in support of the Kurds, positions us, the US, to be very influential in that key region.

And besides, Trump criticized the past administration for telegraphing our intentions and giving information to our enemies. If his intentions are indeed withdrawing our troops, he just committed the same error. Now...if he has no intention of withdrawing and this is just some ruse.....maybe to buy time....then it is unusual...but shrewd.

    Re: Good Guys Strike Back!

It's nuts! This is stupid and I call on the US and our Western allies to intervene now.

First, the latest...the Kurds counter-attacked and have retaken every village/town they were driven from by the Syrian Army in eastern Syria. BUT! the Kurds also paused from this effort to fight along side the same Syrian Army to crush an ISIS cell discovered in some remote valley. And then, together, they drove Turkish forces out of a Syrian village in the north. So....the Kurds and the Syrians are allies vs. ISIS and the invading Turks, but then fight each other. This is nuts!

Turkey is a member of NATO, but they are not acting as a member in Syria and are instead pursuing self-interests. The US is allies and "friends" with both the Turks and the Kurds and yet we are not stepping up and putting an end to this fighting between them. This is not good.

In political news, it looks likes the Kurds will lose a lot of seats in the Iraqi Parliament in the pending May 12 election. If this happens, the Kurds will not be represented and things are likely to turn against them. I don't think the Kurds will go quietly into the night.... civil war looms in Iraq, and it will get nasty, which will ultimately be an opportunity for Iran and Russia and other bad players to grab more of the region.

We need some strong leadership in this, and soon.
