Places to eat in Lafayette

Thanks. I understand that the first Don's was in Morgan City. If there was a family split it might have been amicable after a while. Cousins opened Landry's all over the place. As far north as Shreveport and at least two in Texas - Beaumont and Houston. At least when the Houston locations closed Floyd had a non compete agreement, but it must have applied only to him as Don's continued in other locations. Eventually the Don's in Houston was the basis for the Landry's Seafood. After his non compete expired Floyd Landry opened Floyds. I have been to at least two locations and the food is up to the old Don's quality. I had never been to any other Don's so I can't really comment either. As far as Landry's I believe Pappas is better - Pappadeaux, Pappasitos (Mexican), and Pappas seafood (not Cajun).

I believe the Dons on Johnston st. is called Don's Seafood Hut.

Don's in Shreveport was a great restaurant for decades. Unfortunately, they didn't keep up with the times and as their customer base aged, their business dwindled. Closed a few years ago. Never had a bad meal there and most were just great. And the Don's Old Fashioned was excellent!

I like Blue Dog Cafe. It's on Pinhook not far from the DoubleTree. Someone already said that if you wanted to get three sheets to the wind, go to La Fonda's. They add Everclear to their margaritas.

A long-time co-worker of mine who is now retired work in Lafayette in the oilfield in the early 1970s. He said a group from his office would have lunch at LaFonda's every Thursday. When they were seated a group of waiters would put several carafes of margaritas on the table.

One week they were joined by a coworker in his 20s who was newly married and Baptist. And not used to the amounts of alcohol in a that type of margarita. By the end of the meal he was clearly having problems. Then when they got up to leave he literally couldn't walk. They carried him out.

Remembering that he lived a few blocks away and had a young wife at home, they decided to drive over to his house. Knowing they would get an earful from his wife for their part in getting him drunk, they carried him to the front door. Propped him up against it. Then rang the doorbell and ran.

When she opened the door and they knew he was in good hands they sped away.

There is a handful of good places downtown(Jefferson Street Pub, Tsunami Sushi, and French Press). If you are looking for cajun, there isnt much near the highways. Maybe one or two on 90(Antler's).
Some for local are:

Creole Lunch House(house in the hood with good home cajun cooking) I like the stuffed bread and this is fairly close to the highway.
Villagers Cafe(poboys)
Smitty Wings(buffalo wings)
Blue dog(cajun)
Billy's boudin has good boudin balls(this is actually close to the highway on the way to Lake Charles)
Fat Pat(bar and grill)
Johnsons Boucaniere(cajun and BBQ)


Depending on what day you pass through you might be able to try Vermionville by the airport. Acadian historic village with a sit down restaurant of cajun food. There are a few good places in River Ranch(Agave, Tap Room, Bonefish,)

If you want a nice place, try Ruffinos, Charlie Gs, or Marcello's Wine Market

If you just use yelp or something you should be good with the top restaurants.

And if you want cheap liquor for you Nola stay. Stop by Marcello's on Johnston. Lot of cheap stuff in there.
