Sokol played 2 years as a JuCo All-American QB before going to Iowa and then to LA Tech as a 5th YEAR SENIOR. Driskel started most of his career in the SEC before eventually going to LA Tech as a 5th YEAR SENIOR.

J'mar and our WRs need tons of reps together and not just during official spring practices. His two TDs at Arkansas were both set up by a Xavier Woods interception and a Prince Sam interception, and he also turned the ball over. Tim Rattay is an excellent QB coach and HOPEFULLY he will be able to get J'mar ready in time.

A lot of Tech fans were very confident that Brian Stallworth would step right in and be successful after Tim Rattay graduated because Stallworth threw the TD pass that beat Alabama. Stallworth was in truly phenominal physical shape and could run like the wind. He also led NCAA Div 1 football in pass interceptions thrown the season after Tim Rattay left.
There is one big difference - Stallworth was never given room to grow in the offense except for the one USL game and the one play against Bama...

Atleast Skip has given J'mar ample opportunity to RUN the true offense in game situations in mop up duty

We have to remember he is only going to be a RS SOPH and players usually improve the most between their SOPH and JR years

And some (see Alabama's QB et al) actually do well as true freshmen. So experience isn't everything (very helpful though). Also Stallworth didn't have Rattay as coach.

I am far less worried about J'Mar than I was Ryan before this season. Also I am not expecting J'Mar to put up the numbers RH did when the season is over either. I may be wrong but just not sure we will be as wide open as we were last season after losing some key OL, a SR QB, TT, and CH. He will have plenty of weapons and he will produce but it will be interesting to see what our offense looks like next year. I also have a feeling the spring will calm some of you guys fears.

To put some perspective on this discussion, TT and CH are the first pair of 1,000 yd receivers during the same season at Tech (need to double check since the article may not have gone back to the Rattay - Edwards era). Since the 2000 season there have been 4 or 5 1,000 yard receivers at Tech. James Jordan in 2000, Delwin Daige 2002 or 2003 ( I think), QP 2011 & 2012, TT 2015, TT & CH 2016.

Oops! Daige was in 1999 season. TT and CH first pair to eclipse 1,000 yd receiving.

I won't worry about the QB unless J'Mar gets hurt.

Don't count Jack Abraham out. He may yet be our hidden gem and will get plenty of off season reps with receivers with JMar in baseball.

I don't think J'Mar is missing any reps - which is what most of our people can't quite grasp...

He may not be missing organized practice time but is definitely missing afternoon informal time now and will miss more when they make the post season in baseball. JMar is clearly the starter but Jack Abraham and team should benefit from extra opportunity while JMar is in baseball. Can't ever have too many reps with receivers in my book. Timing in the spread offense if paramount.

    I AGREE.

Can never over-state the importance of a QB and his WRs playing pitch and catch, running patterns, getting used to each other. Timing is everything. Being on the same page...being able to read each other's mind is crucial.

We had a flag football team and none of us were particularly athletic. Yet, for three straight years we were one of the better teams. Why? Because we grew up together and literally had played football together for some 15-20 years! I QBed most of the time, and knew exactly what my receivers were gonna do in any given situation. They would break off the pattern based on what the defense was doing, and they and I read it EXACTLY the same way 100% of the time. I also knew how to throw the pass, based on the capabilities of my guys. Simple.

No, college QBs and WRs don't have the luxury of 15-20 years of getting to know each other, which is why it is even MORE important they spend time together, by themselves, running patterns. How does a WR "finish" the play? If you don't know the answer to that question, you won't be an effective QB.

I'd argue very few do. A 22/23 year old RS Senior may have joined a team with a buddy from the same high school. Many start playing peewee football at 6-7 I believe, and Abraham had a receiver from his high school class join Tech I believe.

You see this occasionally, a QB and a WR played together in HS and go to the same college and continue to be successful. In those situations that WR is the QB's favorite target. I think Boazy had such a combo some years back. And, you see it elsewhere at times. It works for the reasons already stated.
