From a former ESPN employee and Marshall alum..

While this story is being reported everywhere, it isn't exactly accurate.......

ASN isn't going off the air and it isn't disappearing, in fact, look for it to add up to 10 million homes rather quickly and add an OTT app.....

Sinclair is NOT putting it out of business or selling it, it is however about to take in a partner to manage the network.....I've been a consultant to ASN for two years and the management team has been the singular problem in the network being successful.....the operations will move, management team wil be gone and replaced by a new team that will be chosen by the managing partner, but Sinclair will still be the major or at least a major player in the Network.....this should be seen as a solid opportunity for the rights owners that currently have contracts with ASN....... while this may not be the best solution for ASN, it is a giant step in the right direction.

This and other articles are premature and mostly inaccurate (but have some facts correct)...... no deal is as yet final, but one should be finalized soon.

That is heartening, at least. I like being able to watch directly on tv, instead of computer to tv. Plus, the exposure is MUCH better on tv than streaming.

    Some American Sports Network Updates

Caught this article this afternoon from the Charleston Gazette-Mail regarding the possibility of American Sports Network remaining a viable entity. Take a few minutes, read it & come back here.

I've spoken to a source with knowledge of the situation and they've provided the following, some of which matches what Doug Smock has reported:
    • American Sports Network, as its currently known & comprised, is indeed going away. A new entity will be replacing it. Could it have the Campus Insiders or 120 Sports name on it? I don't know. They may be involved in picking up existing ASN obligations.
    • The West Palm Beach facility would be the master control for the new network, as I believe it was for ASN (ASN couldn't stream a few games this year due to weather issues at master control in WPB), with other staff located in other areas for marketing, sales, studio, etc. Currently, Campus Insiders runs its studio in Chicago.
    • Since use of a master control facility involved, that appears to be a sign of a linear TV operation, with more emphasis towards online distribution than Sinclair had with ASN. This would line up with Doug's wording about "stronger, more diversified distribution"
    • Nearly all the agreements Sinclair had for producing events will expire at the end of the current athletic year, except for Conference USA. This falls in line with at least one agreement:
@mattsarz FYI, Hockey East's deal with ASN was up after this year

I do not know if this new entity would seek previous ASN partners to bolster their lineup.
More to follow. Hopefully this week.

The number of our games they carried dropped off drastically from two years ago.

It was easy to see they were having management issues when they made the decision to sub lease Sun Belt games from ESPN but then missed the deadline in August for moving the start time of at least one game. Another game - Boise vs. UL-Lafayette - wasn't broadcast in Boise. Not good.

Campus Insider's relationship with Twitter is responsible for more than half of the Conference USA games that I watched. Same with MWC. Seems to me a pretty good way to get the games out there. I was actually thinking it would be cool if AAC did something like that for off-network games.

That stuff is great for city dwellers. People who live in the country cant access it.

I'm much more concerned about access for our fans, not exposure to the general public. There's too much competition for the average Joe sports fan and not enough value. It's much more important for our fans to be able to watch our games on real TV.

And twitter has only streamed a fraction of Campus Insiders C-USA productions.

T-Mac indicated on the Tim Fletcher show that someone would be picking up ASN's inventory. He stated they had been a coverage partner, not a financial partner.

Re: American Sports Network to cease operations at the end of March

    http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...300439656.html

This afternoon, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: SBGI), Silver Chalice and 120 Sports announced plans to combine forces as equity partners on a new multi-platform sports network, featuring a linear broadcast and comprehensive digital offerings.
The network will be built through the merging of 120 Sports' live studio operations, Silver Chalice's Campus Insiders' live collegiate games and Sinclair's American Sports Network's (ASN) distribution and live collegiate games.
The existing linear network operated by ASN will be rebranded and improved. The broadcast component of the new, unified network, upon its launch scheduled for later this year, immediately will reach millions of homes on Sinclair-owned multicast channels, both over-the-air and in turn through carriage by multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs).
"With this incomparable set of strategic partners, we are evolving ASN into a vastly improved network with access to exclusive content and a combined linear and premium OTT offering that is the model for the future of television," said Chris Ripley, President and CEO of Sinclair.
