Sinclair to purchase Tribune Media - ASN/Stadium Related

    May 8, 2017
Sinclair Broadcast Group To Acquire Tribune Media Company For Approximately $3.9 Billion\

What does this have to do with Tech???
Sinclair is the owner of American Sports Network (ASN) that will soon become Stadium sports.
This adds Sinclair to several large markets they previously weren't in, including DALLAS and HOUSTON. This makes it more like to get the new Stadium channel OTA in these markets.

Doug Smock: C-USA TV deal could get interesting

    http://www.wvgazettemail.com/sports-...et-interesting

    Journalism at its best!

C-USA is undergoing a new round of negotiations for 2018, trying to recover from the collapse of rights fees in 2016. I’m hearing Sinclair wants out, which puts the whole ASN/Stadium thing in doubt, and beIN Sports wants out.The league could land a game or two more from the ESPN empire, and all the ESPN3 games it can stand (with most of it university-produced, by the way). Expect CBS Sports to stick around; will another partner pop up?

Re: Sinclair to purchase Tribune Media - ASN/Stadium Related

Wow! Look at what Sinclair is acquiring.

Tribune owns or operates 42 television stations in 33 markets, cable network WGN America, digital multicast network Antenna TV, minority stakes in the TV Food Network and CareerBuilder, and a variety of real estate assets. Tribune’s stations, a list of which is available in Tribune’s most recent Form 10-K filed on March 1, 2017, consist of 14 FOX, 12 CW, 6 CBS, 3 ABC, 2 NBC, 3 MyNetworkTV affiliates and 2 independent stations. The group includes stations in the top three DMAs in the country, seven in the top 10 and 34 in the top 50 DMAs.

Tribune Stations - Sinclair may have to divest some stations if they are already in that market

So two stations in New Orleans, including the ABC affiliate, WGNO TV. And its sister stations, the CW affiliate, NOLA 38, which has a prime location in the cable lineup.

I want to hear opinions on how our TV potential now compares to other G5s. Were were too early to judge our token AD's negotiating skills? Did she just get lucky or unlucky? Do we need to suck up to Karl Benson?

Some things aren't worth the money you get for them.

Don't you love the way other C-USA schools' media are embracing the confererence administration?

If ESPN must have our Championship game, then the conference MUST have a regular season schedule on the non-ESPN3 channels.

ASN/Stadium is another story. Tommy put it best in an interview recently. They are a coverage partner, not a financial partner. We are probably a year away before the 2018 deal is announced. Right now CUSA is looking for potential financial partners. ASN/Stadium doesn't fall into that category and likely declined that type of relationship with the league.

That doesn't mean they won't continue to be a coverage partner. If ASN/Stadium is televising/broadcasting/streaming events for multiple conferences like the Sun Belt, Patriot League, Big South, Colonial, etc...in September, 2018 then I suspect it will have some type of coverage deal with CUSA, as well.

CUSA is like a bad political candidate. It just can't control its message. Information leaks from certain presidents and by the time it makes its way to certain journalists its devolves into something that only sometimes resembles the truth. Like a game of telephone for 10 year olds. It goes from a president who gives a nugget to an AD who give a nugget to an SID who passes that along to a beat writer. And then who knows what comes out on the other end.

If I were the current commissioner I would form a small committee of presidents and keep that smaller group informed. That's what several P5 conferences, like the Big 10, are now doing. And I would not include the presidents of either Marshall or ODU. They both have agendas. I would include Guice, WKU's president and their AD, along with Rice's president.

    Things have to change.

I can't argue with that. This C-USA prez or any C-USA prez needs to have a circle of inside supporters.

Would you care to clarify that line a little bit between coverage and financial partners?

Are you implying that ASN/Stadium/Sinclair is not willing to pay for C-USA Content, but willing to broadcast it?

Basically, C-USA does not receive financial consideration from ASN. ASN produces the games and airs them so we get "free" coverage.

Correct, which is what is happening today and over the past two years.
