Among other things, the column states:
"The goal is to get away from conventional reporting and writing methods, fully embracing a digital-first mindset. We will de-emphasize game stories, which are less popular with audiences. (Don’t worry; you can always find the score at thenewsstar.com.)"

Or said another way, "we will now do stories that we can call the person on the phone for an interview instead of spending money to send someone to the game to actually observe and report".

This is the same change I noticed the last time I looked at the Shreveport Times; nothing but a bunch of FEATURE stories. It get's the publishers out of the "deadline" business. No more racing against the clock and losing to other forms of media. However, there's just not a lot of value in a newspaper full of fluff pieces.

In particular, we will deliver more:
Compelling human interest stories with strong character development. The central characters might be sports figures, but these stories will echo themes and emotions to which everyone can relate.
Watchdog and investigative enterprise that hold public officials at all levels of sports accountable.
Quirky stories that surprise and delight.
Shorter stories driven by the conversation of the day.
Personality-driven columns that help brand our sports experts.

That's not much of a change except we'll get more commentary of what an LSU fan thinks of Tech. Our part-time beat writer rarely wrote game stories this year. Maybe half of our football games. We were probably the first school in history without a beat writer covering their football team in a conference championship game. He covered less than 1/3 of basketball games and less than 1/5 of baseball games. WKU sent two beat reporters to cover the Toppers' basketball game in Ruston this year while we had no beat writer at our home game to cover Tech.

OMG. Their first locally written "editorial" in weeks, if not months,...and it's this wannabe drivel?

They're gonna do all this with their smallest staff ever of less than 6 writers and a staff photog and an editor and a couple of "planners"....Not!

They could be putchased if they held the annual contract for the "legals" in but now I've been told they are of no value to any interested buyer until that happens. The Ouachita Citizen has that contract.

Yes, they'll still give Gannett's LSU hack a full 3 pages for one feature on the Tigers' third stringers.

It's obvious they're going to move to 3 days a week for all of their daily Louisiana publications, perhaps by August. That would be a good time to make the move. Then let's see how this goes over in September when the prep season starts. No Saturday paper with perhaps very limited prep coverage. That'll go over well.

I'm interested to see what happens in Lafayette. This same editorial ran in the Lafayette paper last week. John Georges, the owner of The Advocate, could easily rebrand the "Acadiana Advocate" as the "Lafayette Advocate" and attempt to put the Gannett owned paper, the Daily Advertiser, out of business. I'm sure the legal news and government notices will go to whoever is publishing daily. He could then go after every single business who advertises with Gannett. And I suspect he would get most of them.

We haven't had timely prep coverage here in years. The Sunday paper usually reports on "select" games that were played on Friday.

Why would the legals go to a "daily". The majority of legals run in weeklies and do just fine.

Here's why legals should run in weeklies: their subscriptions are much, much less for those who keep up with that kind of stuff. The governments would just have to get their $hit together and make sure the correct number of publication dates are executed for the legal notices.

That argument won the legals for the Ouachita Citizen a couple of years ago.

Because the law in some municipalities around the state is that the legals must be published in a daily newspaper. I believe it's still the law in Lafayette and Baton Rouge.
