    Gerrymandering

Is this part of our problem, as it relates to the extreme partisanship?

The Supreme Court could have a say:

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/justices-...-politics.html

The trend to draw "safe" districts has created an environment where House of Representatives reps have to cater to their base, to assure re-election. This is true for both Congress and for state legislatures across the country. Doesn't affect the Senate and other statewide offices.

The two houses are elected differently and operate by different rules on purpose. The Founding Fathers understood the need to have the two houses, each with its own approach to passing laws. I suppose if we can accept that the Senate is the "conservative" body (not its political leaning, I mean HOW it passes bills) and the House is more "shoot from the hip" then the latter body being partisan might be a good thing....again PROVIDED the Senate can set aside such politics and just follow its own rules and traditions. Unfortunately, the Senate is not always non-partisan. The absolute worst example was under Dirty Harry. Senator Mitch McConnell is more in tune with the traditions of the Senate, and has always demonstrated he supported following the rules. He wants to do that now. BUT! he is getting tremendous pressure from some on the Right to "act like Harry Reid did" and just ram legislature through.

Anyway, gerrymandering affects the House side. We'll see what the SC does.

    Re: Gerrymandering

In theory, I would be opposed to gerrymandering. In practice, I don't know how you draw fair lines. It has to be population related so it's not as easy as pulling out a ruler. Once you start having to draw lines through cities, etc., you have to bring in human thinking. Drawing the lines so that the party divisions are almost exactly even is just as much gerrymandering as what we have today. How do you make it "random"?

It's comical to look at Louisiana Senate district maps.

We really do have some horrible individuals serving in both houses down there.

The main thing is to keep these guys in office for as long as possible. They have big money at stake with lots of friends and family members sucking the govermnet teat.

Kennedy will be the deciding vote, but since there's no clean way of drawing districts for partisan reasons, i think he'll keep gerrymandering since both parties do it

    Re: Gerrymandering

I don't know a whole lot about the 6th District Georgia, but I assume it's pretty much like most other congressional districts, gerrymandered. The fact a Repub held on to that seat is not news. The GOP has held it since 1979. I suppose the only news is the 'craps thought they saw an opportunity to steal a seat, spent a record $23 million trying, and failed. BOTH sides made it about Trump. This was billed as a referendum on Trump, and his policies. The Trumpsters shouldn't hold this up as some major "told you so" as its been a GOP-safe district for decades. At best, it's a minor "okay, Trump, we're still willing to give you a chance to prove you can fix our nation's problems."

Interestingly, Romney carried this district by a whopping 20 pts in 2012, Trump barely got it in 2016, by a mere 2 pts, and last night, Handel, running as a Trumpster, carried it by 6 pts.

BTW, the reason I think this current gerrymandering system will continue is because it was set up to assure minorities will win congressional seats, and state legislature seats. Districts are drawn to provide black majorities, and after you do that, the neighboring districts are left overwhelmingly white. No way will the SC or any other body change the current system. JMHO

The GOP also held serve in South Carolina's 5th District last night. That race was considered very safe, which is why it didn't get the national attention that the Ga race got. Since Trump took office there has been 5 special elections and the GOP is 5-0. Only two of those were thought to be somewhat up for grabs.

Not everyone was happy with the GOP win. Some even cut away the victory speech early and went back to the talking political heads in the studio where attitudes and emotions were slightly less than jovial.

Rachel Maddow blamed the weather. "Do you think the weather played a part in the outcome in a partisan way?"

    Can't make it up.

Sums up what is wrong with "news" these days. When one team wins it shouldn't look like everyone at the table just lost their dog. These people are all invested in a particular outcome and their team lost. Besides partisan pundits you really shouldn't be able to tell what side these people are on.

I have some very liberal acquaintances who are heavily involved in Tennessee politics at all levels. They are not very smart at picking their battles when it comes to unseating Republicans. Hopefully, this will be a continuing pattern. And hopefully the newly elected Republicans will help push Trump's agenda.

I know what she's saying. She saying that old white guys don't mind getting wet, but women, minorities, and millennials melt when they get wet. That's what she's saying.

Yep, if a conservative host or somebody at Fox said that they'd be lined up protesting and demanding they be fired already.
