Nope - shoulda never gotten this bad - and begging for money to fix it - and the cost....hell no
It is worth noting that our AD didn't indicate he gives a crap about how bad the old sign looked. I don't think a $30K grass roots effort will look good on his resume. It's gold on Wickstrom's resume, but our AD is looking to claim BIG MONEY raised by other people.
What the heck is wrong with a specific fund raising project like this? It's something that needs to be done. And gives donors who don't have a check book the size of an old Sears catalog something they can look at and say "I got a piece of that!"
I still think Tech made a mistake not putting in an effort to do grassroots fund raising for the DAC and the press box. And I don't buy the excuse of not having enough staff to do it "right". But this is a real step in the right direction.
50 days left in the campaign, about 1/3 of the way there. So, if the campaign comes up a little short, I suppose Tech can kick in the balance, right?
You know fundraising is basically begging for money? That's what this is.. fundraising. The best thing about projects like this is it gives an opportunity to folks like me to give for a specific project and think I had a small part in that. This is what alumni do. They give money to help university. And technically we aren't fixing the old sign, we are getting a brand new one.
I agree it should have been done a long time ago, but it wasn't. So we can gripe about it during times when money is very tight, or we can help remedy the problem. I choose the latter.

Take it down and refinish it. It's "vintage". Is it "original"?
