The United States doesn't recognize an independent Taiwan.

Economic Cowards when this was done.
So, what is stopping the Chicoms from invading and crushing Taiwan? I had thought the only reason they wouldn't attack was fear of having to deal with the US and our allies. Under what "legal" measure would we defend Taiwan then? And surely none of our allies would want to get involved in a shooting war for this.
It is true the Chicoms, with all their chest-thumping, know the US would absolutely kick their ass in a stand-up fight. Throw in some of our allies...and hopefully that would be India too, now the 3rd largest military in the world, they just passed China into 3rd, behind the US and Russia, and given many experts think in such a case of all-out war, a large portion of the Chinese population would revolt against the commie leadership, the Chicoms know they had better avoid a war with us. BUT! if the Chicoms invade little ole Taiwan...who would make the commies pay a very high price in a war... but ultimately lose due to the size difference, would we and our allies just send strongly-worded letters of condemnation? You know the UN (and WHO) will side with the commies...
We all know that a Dem in the WH would deal with it by sending the Chicoms $150 billion to help pay for their losses in the war with Taiwan. But, what would a real POTUS do? What would the sentiment of the American people be? I bet MOST people would view trying to defend Taiwan as another Vietnam...or Afghanistan...and say, no thanks, let's stay out of it.
It is known as “strategic ambiguity.” We haven’t contradicted Beijing’s view of one China and don’t recognize Taiwan officially as it’s own country and therefore don’t have diplomatic relations with it, but as part of our longstanding containment strategy with PRC we have provided assurances of assistance for self defense of Taiwan in the event of Beijing aggression.
The commies will get their asses kicked if they try something. Taiwan's military is not particularly large (26th largest) but does possess some powerful "toys" making it 19th on the overall global firepower scale. But! the point of Taiwan's military is not offensive, so they don't need a big one. They are strictly defensive and all focused on China. Left on their own, Taiwan would eventually lose a war vs. Red China, but they would make the commies pay a high price. So much so the Chicoms would be hard-pressed to put down domestic uprisings. But if Taiwan got some help, well....
If China were the aggressor they would find it hard to find sympathy and thus allies willing to join the war with them. Sure, the UN and WHO would be sending out propaganda, but the rest of the world would all cast an eye at the US. China has one operational carrier...the US has 26, and just from that region of the world, we can count on 8 more carriers from allies. Sure, China's air force would operate from land bases but there is an important disadvantage to depending on land bases....they don't move! They can be readily targeted and attacked.
Clearly Taiwan won't attack mainland China, so the only possible scenario casts the commies as the aggressor.
Carriers are just big targets now. With satellites To find them and missiles to sink them it make them obsolete against an equal opponent like China. Just like airplanes made battleships obsolete.
Well, that represents a threat but so far most military experts still place a lot of emphasis on a carrier, and its support task force. The group is not exactly defenseless...even against missile attack. As I mentioned, if you think a mobile carrier is easy to locate, then target, and then hit with a missile fired from hundreds or even thousands of miles away...what do you think of a land base just sitting there? And that potential threat is the reason President Trump has established our new Space Force...the Chicoms can't use satellites to locate anything, if theirs have been destroyed.
Yes, missiles are a threat...which is why our surface fleet is dominated by guided missile cruisers and destroyers. They also have anti-missile missiles and other rapid-firing cannons that can put out a blanket of shrapnel in the path of an incoming missile. Nothing is fool-proof and in an all-out, to the death war with an opponent like China, we will suffer losses. That would likely include the loss of some carriers too. But, why do you think the Chicoms, and other potential enemies, fear our carrier groups so much? If they are truly obsolete then there would be no concern.
Oh I agree on everything you say and a carrier group projects a huge amount of power. I’m just concerned about the defensive systems against a foe that has similar capabilities. They aren’t battle tested against Chinese systems and I hope they never are. China will have no restraints on any weapons systems and no amount of casualties will deter them. Elimination of the leaders is the only answer to stop them.
I guess part of my concern is that the Russians have narrowed the gap and i worry about our infatuation with technology and the cost it puts on systems. The duty cycle of the newest fighter planes is concerning while we still fly the B52 from the 50’s, which I love.
And of course WHO/UN are saying China is doing it perfect and there is no risk again. Yes the agencies that buddied up to China and brought us The Kung Flu.
