For you guys pushing the "new, smaller, faster LB" narrative, do you really think this info is not available for immediate viewing? I mean, seriously......LSU has 18 LB's on their 2017 roster, and not a single one is under 6'1.

    LSU's 2017 LB's:

4 K'Lavon Chaisson LB 6-5 230 Fr. HS Houston, Texas (North Shore HS)
6 Jacob Phillips LB 6-3 235 Fr. HS Nashville, Tenn. (East Nashville Magnet HS)
8 Patrick Queen LB 6-2 215 Fr. HS Livonia, La. (Livonia HS)
23 Corey Thompson LB 6-2 222 Sr. 3L Missouri City, Texas (Lawrence Elkins HS)
24 Tyler Taylor LB 6-3 234 Fr. HS Buford, Ga. (Lanier HS)
35 Devin Voorhies LB 6-2 223 Sr. 3L Woodville, Miss. (Wilkinson County HS)
40 Devin White LB 6-1 255 So. 1L Springhill, La. (North Webster HS)

49 Arden Key LB 6-6 238 Jr. 2L Atlanta, Ga. (Hapeville Charter Academy)
50 Layton Garnett LB 6-4 247 Fr. RS West Monroe, La. (West Monroe HS)
51 Jonathan Rucker LB 6-1 249 Sr. 2L Ponchatoula, La. (Ponchatoula HS)

87 Sci Martin LB 6-4 240 So. 1L New Orleans, La. (McDonogh 35 HS)

    Texas A&M's results are similar.

    Texas A&M's 2017 LB's:

    16 Dwaine Thomas LB 6-2 225 Jr. 2L Boutte, La. / Hahnville

58 Braden White LB 5-11 220 Fr. RS Florence, Ala. / Florence

I could pull up more examples of why some of you guys are just wrong, but I'm not going to. I learned a long time ago that most of you won't learn from it anyway.

    SEC Monsters: Alabama's Linebackers

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/6...ma-linebackers

Just so we're clear, nobody --especially me-- is saying "smaller" guys can't play Linebacker at this FBS level. There are exceptions to EVERY rule. For exampe, I believe LA Tech's 1970's star Joe McNeely --at 5'10"-- could have played at almost any level. It's just that the NUMBERS tend to ALWAYS favor the BIGGER guys. Yes, "pass coverage" is very important in the college game today, but so is RUN STOPPAGE and goal line stands.
think most of us agree with your opinion that p5 teams ( especially SEC teams) need big guys because they love to run in SEC. CUSA is a passing conference -- not a lot of teams win without throwing the ball --so speed is crucial -- I watched Joe his entire career -- think is passed a few years ago --

I hope our coaches don't start culling recruits because they are one inch too short or 10 pounds too light. I'll take linebackers any time that are 5-11, 215, and can run a 4.55 forty. I'd like to see some film on him.

    Re: Got a guy

In the state of Louisiana there are 24 recruits in the Rivals database that are 6'1 or taller. Only 4 are 3 stars or greater (2 are committed to LSU) Point is there aren't many kids in our recruiting area that have legit size and speed. If they do then they most likely go to an SEC school. Mississippi has 8 LBs listed as 6'1 or taller and 4 are 3 stars (2 committed to USM, both from Hattiesburg, and another to Ms St). There is one guy in Mississippi (3 stars according to rivals) that I think we could get that is of good size named Peter Grey. He is 6'4 230 with offers from mostly AAC, CUSA, and Sun Belt schools. We have not offered. We have offers out to 2 guys that are uncommitted in Texas that are over 6'1. They have offers to many schools. I hope we land both. I would love to have large linebackers but there aren't many and IMO is our toughest poition to recruit.

Disclaimer: Stars aren't everything but for the sake of the argument this is the barometer I used.

COYHCSH has never allowed his undersized LBs to play anything but special teams. He allowed that joke for LBs we had on the field all year last year, but never gave the "undersized" guys a gametime shot.

Exactly why I mentioned in my initial post that this kid may be a perfect fit for our punt & kick coverage special teams. Of course that was just before some of our BB&B neanderthals wanted to turn this thread into a lecture on the merits of recruiting smasll linebackers.

If we can get 70% of that across the board, we'd have a team full of Usain Bolts.

I'm reminded of a story that agrees with HogDawg's thoughts: A football coach was asked if given the choice, would he rather have fast players or tall players. He said TALL players! When asked why, he said, "Well, in the fourth quarter, the tall players are still TALL"!!

If you say that 5'11 is undersize, then HD & PD are wrong here. Russell Farris, our top returning starting LB, is 5'11. He also started the Conference Championship game

The 5'11" thing was not my definition of undersized. It was HD's. We had at least two guys who only played special teams who were under 5'11" but never were allowed to play last year.
