    New College Football Division

The four guys (Pollack, Howard and two guys I don't know) on ESPNU last night (11/29) were really talking up a G5 play off. I assume they mean similar to the P5 not the Div IA playoff. They kept making the point that mathematically no G5 team is ever going to make the PLAY OFF. They didn't specifically mention a separate division, but that's what it would come down to. It would be just another way to keep the poor sisters of charity poor by excluding them from any of the major bowl games.

I swear the only way we can break their monopoly is for all G5 teams to refuse to play any P5. Make them beat themselves up. If they only played each other there wouldn't be any money games only equal games and it would even out their schedules to only six home games each. They would lose a ton of money. Besides their records wouldn't look so great and maybe their fans might get a little upset over normal 7-5 seasons. Of course the G5 schools would never do this because they would lose their money games which they depend on to balance their budgets.

I don't know without looking it up, but the current contract will end in a few years and then they will expand to 8 teams. 5 champs and 3 at large. One of the at-large will be a G5 school.

Mathematically impossible? What a bunch of horse hockey.

You dont have a good SoS. Why? Because you don't play anyone. Why do they have good SoS? Because they play teams with good SoS. And so it goes.

A G5 playoff means the end of our toehold in the NCAA.

Any AD or Coach or pundit who expresses interest in such a proposal should be immediately fired from the school, team, or small town newspaper, because they have no business being involved with a non-Cartel school.

That means 15 games that year, so I'd better save up some travel expenses!

Probaby too early to call the ticket office though.

Nah with Skip you'll never have to worry about big time games.

The problem is that the bowl landscape is almost completely segregated as well to where we aren't playing on the same field. The American Conference has bowl games against the 8th best SEC team outside of the playoffs and the 6th best ACC team outside of the playoffs and the Mountain West champ plays the 5th best PAC12 team outside of the playoffs. Otherwise, P5 teams are only contracted to play other P5 teams, and the only exception occurs when there are unfilled slots.

A5 or P5 snobs put this idea out there from time to time. They usually don't have any real thoughts on how to set it up. While saying "they will never get in" they are scared to death that when the playoff does go to 8 teams, a G5 team will likely be part of the mix even if they don't get an auto bid.

The snobs would love to stick us with a FCS type playoff system that loses money and lessens the perception of our product. We went through this exact thing back when 1AA was formed.

Pollack is one of the worst A5/P5 snobs. I hadn't noticed as much with Dez until the other night.

Which is exactly why the proliferation of bowl games was allowed to happen.

That's because some G5s think they're in a separate class by themselves -- AAC and WAC most notably. Then you could put us in that group because we're better than the SB or MAC. We're left fighting one another for the dregs or bones the P5 throw to us.

Tim Brando has talked about this since the 4-team playoff was announced. According to Tim it was the Pac 12 presidents that insisted on 4 rather than 8. He has said for years that the day the Pac 12 is left out of the 4 is the day we begin to see a move to 8. That day may be tomorrow.

He has also said that 8 won't happen politically without a G5 rep being a part of it. As others have stated, it would be the 5 P5 champions, the highest ranked G5 champion, along with 2 at-large bids.

    Re: New College Football Division

Back in the early 90s the now P5 tried to completely separate themselves from the NCAA. They wanted to completely control the TV market. Of course the proliferation of college football channels kind of quashed that. Was the formation of Div IAA (now FCS) part of the deal to keep them in?

Notice how each one of them is very careful when talking about the top AAC teams. They all break down a lot of film, so they know exactly what UCF, USF, and Memphis look like. But none of them ever talk about exactly where those schools should be ranked.

The only clue as to how the ESPN crowd really feels is something said on ESPN radio that I happened to hear a few weeks ago. Another analyst who watches film day and night, I believe it was Brad Edwards, said that those three AAC schools were playing at a top 15 level and that UCF was a top 10 team.

You won't hear that said on any of their TV airwaves.
