So now you advocate a 100% estate tax?

And those reparations should come from the bank account of the person formerly holding them as slaves, not the government.

    Re: What is Systemic Racism?

So....just how many former slaves do some of you think are still living?

Slavery was abolished in 1865. So, even if the slave was an infant, they would have to be 153 years old today to still be alive. If there are any, or even one, fine, pay 'em something.

Actually, many slaves were given payment in the immediate aftermath of the War of Northern Aggression. Many were given land, 40 acres, or in some cases 160 acres, taken from the plantation of their former master. Those that accepted the land, now had their own farm. Quite a bit of that land is still in those families to this day. VERY valuable real estate, in many cases. Some examples here in Natchitoches Parish.

Some former slaves wanted nothing to do with the land of their former master, and turned down that gift. Instead, some chose to travel north and get jobs in the large industrial cities, like Detroit and Pittsburgh. And others were given government jobs/positions. Many were appointed into a political offices, without the necessity of an election. Mayorships, a couple of governorhips, and lots of state and Congressional legislature seats.

Some former slaves fell in with the Carpetbaggers and preyed upon their former masters, and any white Southerner who had something they wanted. This was blatant theft and was enforced at the point of the bayonet by Federal troops stationed in the occupied South. This is what led to the formation of the KKK and other organizations like it. Yes, the Klan formed in December, 1865 by a small group of former Confederate soldiers, but it was mostly a "social" group. They got together to drink, have a bar-b-cue, and lament over the events of the war. It began to grow and take on an active role of fighting back against the injustices of Reconstruction, and the criminal seizing of property, in 1869. Four years of abuse and theft, and some atrocities pushed some Southerners to make a stand.

As in all cases of history such events are driven by a relatively small group of instigators. For their part, MOST of the former slaves did not participate in the wanton theft perpetrated by the Carpetbaggers. They just wanted to settle down on their small farms, raise their families, and mind their own business. But, unfortunately, many were exposed to the retribution handed out by the Klan, who did not stop and examine if this particular family of former slaves were in cahoots with the Carpetbaggers. People were killed, farms burned to the ground. YES! there are cases of the Klan catching up with the evil Carpetbaggers, and some of their former slave co-conspirators. Personally, I think the Klan was justified in dealing with those scumbags. I condemn the killings and destruction of property of those blacks who just happened to be an easy target of the Klan, and were innocent victims.

Anyway, the point is this. Reparations were made to former slaves. It was made to those who were actually held as slaves, and many were handsomely compensated. As I said, you can see examples of that today all over the South, and I know of several such examples here in Natchitoches Parish. Fine. One of those families is multi-millionaires, many times over, because of that land.

D80, several of our posters here believe slavery lasted well into the 20th century.

    Re: What is Systemic Racism?

Got to love this one. So true per Kanye's statements.

Kanye West says 400 years of slavery was a choice for African-Americans

Kanye West sparks new outrage in calling slavery 'choice'...

Following a string of Twitter rants last week, Kanye West turned up at the TMZ offices on Tuesday to film “TMZ Live” and made controversial comments about slavery that caused offense.
Things began when West was asked about his recent support of President Trump and his answer turned to the concept of freedom, prompting some controversial words about the United States’ history with slavery.
“When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice. Like, you were there for 400 years and it’s all of you all? Like, we’re mentally in prison. Like, slavery goes too direct to the idea of blacks,” he said. “So prison is something that unites us as one race, blacks and whites being one race. We’re the human race.”
His comments caused at least one TMZ staffer to clap back. West and the staffer were filmed shouting across the newsroom, abandoning the interview format of “TMZ Live.”

In the clip from “TMZ” staffer, Van Lathan confronts West following the slavery comments.
“Do you feel that I’m feeling, do you feel that I’m being free and thinking free?!” West shouts in the office newsroom.
Lathan fires back: “I actually don’t think you’re thinking anything. I think what you’re doing right now is actually the absence of thought. And the reason that I feel like that is, Kanye, you’re entitled to your opinion; you’re entitled to believe whatever you want, but there’s fact and real life consequence behind everything you just said. While you are making music and being an artist and living the life that you’ve earned by being a genius, the rest of us in society have to deal with these threats to our lives. We have to deal with the marginalization that has come from the 400 years of slavery that you said, for our people, was ‘a choice’… Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled and, brother, I’m unbelievable hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something, to me, that’s not real.”
West approaches him apologizing for hurting him, but Lathan just keeps lecturing the rapper about how his voice is too big. It didn’t take long for the clip to garner backlash on social media.

“How can you honestly sit there and say slavery was a choice,” a third user said shortly after the below video dropped.
West later took to Twitter to clarify his remarks in another thread of disjointed tweets.
"We need to have open discussions and ideas on unsettled pain," he wrote.

"To make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will," he wrote. "My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved."
"They cut out our tongues so we couldn't communicate to each other. I will not allow my tongue to be cut," he continued. "They hung the most powerful in order to force fear into the others. They can no longer stop our voice."

Earlier on Tuesday, West posted a nearly two-hour interview with TV personality Charlamagne Tha God in which he covered many topics, including slavery as well.

"That was the moment that I wanted to use Bitcoin, when I saw Harriett Tubman on the $20 bill,” he said. “It’s like when you just see all the slave movies. It’s like why do you gotta keep reminding us about slavery? Why don’t you… put Michael Jordan on the $20 bill?”
