    We deserved to lose, but...

If you watch the video from the last play of the game-while the ball was still in play-UABís sideline was already storming the field. Iím dead serious when I say if we donít turn that play over for review, we have no reason to EVER complain about a call in ANY game.

Yeah that was pretty crappy. Kick was bad, yes. They blocked it, yes. But that is a foul that should have been called.

Those refs know our reputation, we are not going to complain, they are not concerned. Our AD needs to be compelled to pursue this, we need to have the reputation of taking care of business when it needs to be.

You're right. As soon as the FG was blocked most of UAB's team stormed the field. When Barnes picked up the football and ran with it there were easily 50 Blazers in the field of play. But Conference USA officials aren't going to call that.

It really comes down to whether we had a timeout left. If we did we could use our challenge and claim there was illegal participation in that 12 or more defenders were on the field during the play. The penalty would have been half the distance to the goal and a replay of the down with one untimed down.

If you're the Tech coaching staff you have to do several things. You have to make sure you tell the officials before they leave the stadium. I'm not sure about CUSA, but officiating crews in most conferences will leave the stadium entirely immediately after the game, usually together in a van with a police escort. You have to catch them before that happens. Then you have to have one of your coaches or a Tech official in the press box alert the replay official that you are challenging the ruling on the field.

According to Dave and Teddy, the white hat gathered the refs after the play to discuss something. Any idea what that would have been about?

To follow up on my previous post. This is what happened at the LSU-Tennessee game in 2010, when LSU won the game on an untimed down after an illegal participation penalty. LSU officials in the press box immediately told the replay official there was a problem. To its credit, the SEC had a veteran officiating crew on the field that did not leave the field until replay could look at the play.

None of the teams in our league are going to get that kind of professionalism from a CUSA crew.

If it was about illegal participation they're not going to call it unless someone from Tech makes it an issue.

Plus another half-the-distance-to-the-goal penalty for being on the field of play without wearing their helmets.

Tech's coaching staff messed up big time by not challenging it.

I heard Dave say that, but I don't think the refs gathered to discuss anything. From the replays I saw, it looks like one ref was just calling all the refs to get off the field. There was no ref huddle or discussion on the field from what I saw.

At this point it wouldn't change anything. For it to impact the outcome a penalty would've needed to be called prior to the official end of regulation. in reality the foul didn't have an impact on the outcome, the kick block was clean, no extras interfered with tackling Barnes. We could turn it in to prove a point & hold the league accountable but it's not like the L & W are gonna be reversed.
The title of thread is correct - we deserved to lose this game based on our terrible performance.

Re: We deserved to lose, but...

Guys.....LA Tech fans have so many more officiating calls to complain about yesterday, other than this silly event. I honestly felt like this may have been the worst officiated Tech game since @Arkansas 1997. Tech was flagged for 3 TIMES our season average yesterday. (10 for 95 yds) Yes, we got jobbed at UAB. For example, the "targeting" call against Cooper was absurd. The UAB receiver had already made the catch, had initiated contact with another Tech player and had already run the ball 5 yards down field before Cooper's contact was even made. Since when is a player not allowed to make a hard tackle? The Personal Foul call on McKnight after the TD run was equally ridiculous. There were others, of course.

UAB's CB's and DB's were holding (our WR's) and interfering with our WR's all day, but to my recollection we only benefited from one call. There was more physical contact by the UAB DB's DOWN FIELD than I've ever seen in a college game.

By the way, one other thing that really irritated the heck out of me yesterday.....the UAB Video Board operator played the board very loudly EVERY TIME Tech had the ball on offense, right up until the QB count started on each play. And I mean it was LOUD! It was almost impossible to talk to the person sitting beside me. The UAB video board literally became part of the game. There was no band play until timeouts, and other breaks in action (play reviews, etc...). This was a coordinated effort between the band, the video board operator and the team. I promise you, UAB choreographed this! Screaming and yelling at the field when Tech had the ball was futile, because the video was so loud.

I noticed that also, and there should have been a penalty called resulting in an untimed down. I don't think we "deserved" to not win the game. I don't even know what that mean in this instance.

If it was us, they would have thrown a flag and let UAB kick again. . . guaranteed.
