Re: Week 10: UNT (11/4) HOMECOMING

Interesting to listen to Holtz on Fox's show this afternoon and again on his own show this evening.

    Late 2nd Quarter Timeout

The timeout he called with 46 second left in the first half gave North Texas the final possession of the first half.

Several callers on Fox's show talked about it, but Fox didn't ask him about it. On his own show, someone texted in the question and asked why we called the timeout so early in the play clock. Holtz told Teddy he thought the play clock was running down because a couple of his assistants on the sideline said to call timeout so he did so. He said the fact of when it was called had not come up since the game.

At the end of the show he said he was interested in going back in taking a look at the series of plays to see where the play clock actually was when the timeout was called. When he does he will see that he called it immediately after the second down play without the play clock even starting for the 3rd down play. Tech could have let the play clock run down to 10 seconds before calling the timeout. It would have saved us 3 points. And even if North Texas would have used a timeout it would have likely taken another 5 seconds or so off the clock and forced them to burn a timeout. The Mean Green ended up needing all 3 timeouts and the entire game clock to drive into Tech territory and kick the field goal.

Prevent Defense at End of 1st half

The fact Tech went into the prevent defense on that drive also came up on Fox's show. Tech played a soft Cover 2 on all but one play. On one play the Bulldogs came out with DBs 15 yards off the ball, basically conceding the FG attempt. When I got home and watched the replay on Facebook the color analyst on the broadcast called it correctly when the North Texas drive started. "'Don't go into the prevent because the North Texas QB will pick you apart." He was exactly right. Tech was having huge success running press man coverage but went away from it on that series.

Diamond Formation and why we stopped running it

The diamond formation Tech ran in the first half, and how successful it was, came up on Fox's show. People were asking why Tech abandoned it in the second half. North Texas gave up 43 points earlier this season when UAB ran it against them, and North Texas never really stopped it when Tech ran it in the 1st half. Holtz talked about how much success Tech had with it, but wouldn't say much more about it. He never did talk about why they went away from it.

It's like Holtz is sticking to a script running these plays.

You'll go crazy trying to figure out why Holtz does the things he does. The diamond formation was our bread and butter under Dykes. Why we don't use it more now is a huge mystery to..... never mind, Holtz is coach.
