Yes. We have been coached out of a 7-1 record, with by our standards a weak team, and into a 4-4 crowd killing, crap fest. This team isn’t anywhere near where the past 3 have been, but I had hoped they would grow. Even without growing they had USC, UAB, and USM beat and the play calling etc finished them off. You can’t take an average talented team and hamstring them with sh@tty play calling and bad management.
You are good, I got it. Just wanted to pile on my frustration at our lack of common business sense when it comes to athletic.
That's a silly thing to say. The play you call matters enormously. You have to call plays that maximize your team's strengths and expose the other team's weaknesses. For instance, if the other team's defense is killing you with a pass rush, you off set the pass rush with a variety of screen passes, slants, shovel passes, etc....You CAN usually do this regardless of how poorly your OL is playing.
One of the problems with our run game is that our OL is always in an upright position (pass protection style) when the ball is snapped. Because our OL is standing upright, they can't "fire off the line" like a traditional OL in a run game, and they can't get leverage on their opponent in a man to man blocking scenario. That's why 75% of the running plays we call look like some kind of delayed "draw" play.
I agree, things aren't always perfect at work or coaching. Holtz and staff work long hours trying to figure out a way to get it done. I can assure you, they are more frustrated about the lack of the Dawg's performance than any fan. We have a lot of young players on the field and some injuries as well.
Doesn't matter, that is the hand you are dealt, that is when you "press" some people into service that you thought or they themselves thought they were not ready. Pull up some interns if you need to (pull the red shirts), do what you need to do.
That is where our next leader is going to come from obviously, it will be an underclassman that steps up and makes it happen
