I think it would be a mistake to fire Holtz this year, even if he goes 4-8. If next year doesn't show marked improvement, I think it would be a mistake to keep him.

I listened to the local radio shows that are claiming the boards are calling for Holtz to be fired.

No one on this board has said fire Holtz except for one guy's username (which might be a troll).

Holtz has earned a rebuilding year after three straight 9 win seasons and bowl games. No one is claiming otherwise.

Most of us are just dumbfounded by this cupcake schedule, 7 home games, multiple 1 loss games, very conservative play calling, and a stubbornness about trying anything different.

It's gonna take 2 more seasons like this to fire him. Sadly. I want to fire him after every loss. These close losses make me miss blowing the UH lead when Dykes was here. At least we tried to win those games!

Not sure it's time to be talking a new coach, but if plans aren't on getting a capable QB on the team for next year
We can expect the same results next season!

We may not ever recover from the Holtz era. We have had limited chances to move to the next level, and I bet the last chance to do so will be right as Holtz closes the door on the burning wreckage of Tech football.

I could say he'll do better next year but is there a single person who believes that?

I HOPE we can finish 6-6 and maybe sneak into a bowl. That would be good. And, I hope and EXPECT better things next year out of Holtz.
Thanks dawg80 bringing some sense to this thread. I thought Tech fans were more intelligent than this. MAKE a way to 6-6 this year and recruit like crazy in the offseason. I definitely expect next year to be a year much like we have come to expect thanks to Holtz, competing for a CUSA Championship, 9 wins, and a bowl game.

Skip Holtz has had a lot of advantages that past coaches never had at LA Tech.

    - Tech supporters have poured over $40 MILLION into football stadium upgrades in the last 2 years, so Skip's facilities are some of the best in CUSA.
    - Skip also has the benefit of playing in geographically friendly CUSA. No trips to the west coast every other week like we did back during the Bicknell, Dooley and Dykes eras.
    - Skip has also been the beneficiary of a very weak CUSA schedule, and a mostly weak OOC schedule. 10 years ago, LA Tech played national champion LSU and Ole Miss from the SEC, and a very good CAL team OOC. Other losses were to Top 10 Boise State, a Colin Kaepernick led Nevada, a Sugar Bowl bound Hawaii, and a typical nasty Pat Hill led Fresno State. Life used to be MUCH TOUGHER around here.

Can you even imagine how Skip Holtz would fare with that schedule today? When you lose to UAB and UNT, you just ain't setting the world on fire.

By the way, that 2007 LA Tech team finished 5-7.

I would say Skip Holtz goes into the 2018 season on a very short leash. He better have a good season in 2018, or hell be hitting the bricks. We can find a lot of coaches who can produce 3 winning seasons out of 6 (assuming he falters next season too) with these advantages I've already mentioned. And most will play a more exciting brand of football than Coach Holtz.

We are talking about "buy out" but actually this is just his contract salary. We would or will pay him the same if he stays While technically this is a "buy out" I think of a "buy out" as being what the coach would have to pay if he wanted to move on to a higher paying or more prestigious position. . One assumes that another year would reduce what is owed.

Thank you! Thinking back on the excuses during Bicknell's era, no facilities, tough schedule, Skip has none of that.

Not saying fire the guy now, but we are in a position to demand more of our football coaches. Win games. Win bowls. Win conference championships. Beat P5 teams every now and again. Don't lose at home.

9 win seasons is a plus, bowl wins are a plus, but he has 1 P5 win, no conference championship and he's 2-5 at home this year. Underperforming!

Why has he "earned" a bad year? This isn't a charity. We don't pay a lot of money for Holtz's professional development.

I'm not saying we can or should fire him, but let's not pretend he's "earned" the right to suck. What he's earned so far is a bunch of our money and he's given us bowls, but no conference championships and only 1-11 P5 wins (is that the right number? someone here has it in their heads).

Why does a coach need a "rebuilding" year in his fifth season? This is the year that should reflect what he has built to this point.

Re: Holtz's Worst Season Thusfar Here

After bringing up The WAC, I got to reminiscing, I do miss a lot of those games like Fresno, Hawaii, and Boise. Those teams were not the little sisters of the poor, and most all of them has went on to a better conference.

Remember Pat Hill, he was kind of a nasty guy, but they had attendance and support and were in the national spotlight a lot. Pat Hill never won a WAC championship outright that I know of, only shared in it one year. Their Motto Anybody, anywhere, anytime (actually ours first) got them a lot of recognition and BCS games. According to WIKI, Pat Hill was 44-19 in the WAC, won 17 games against BCS teams and was 4-7 in bowl games, thats 11 bowl games.

Fresno had exciting football, Most everyone in the WAC had exciting football, just not good locations for TECH. My point being, they had a crazy ass coach who could not win his conference but people still came to see his teams, Hill was wide open and going for broke a lot of times, and just as likely to lose as he was to win, but they still came.

Fresno was a nobody university at one time, and look what they did. (I know, different part of the country and larger population, but they still energized the valley)
