North Louisiana vs. South Louisiana

This is the first time I've ever seen this. Apparently about 100 years ago Northwest Louisiana tried to secede from Louisiana and be annexed by Texas. Does anybody have any more info about this?

North vs. south Louisiana

North Louisiana is philosophically and politically more aligned with east Texas than south Louisiana. northwest Louisiana would have been part of Texas had our governor signed the proclamation to allow us to do exit when submitted to him over 100 years ago.

To expect fair and equitable treatment in the world of Louisiana politics for anything going on in our area of the state (when vying with anything in south Louisiana) has and just never seems to happen, and expecting this to change is historically unrealistic.

Ochsner Clinic (New Orleans) is not the primary referral center for patients from north Louisiana. Patients are referred to Houston, Dallas, Little Rock, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, etc. We do not need outside consultations and managers to manage what we have the talent to do ourselves — especially not one from politically competitive south Louisiana.

Secession was a sore issue at the time I guess.

That and Louisiana has always been and will always be corrupt to line the pockets of BR politicians.

I wouldn't call it an identity issues. I remember when N. La didn't embrace Mardi Gras, crawfish were considered dirty eaten only by the very poor, and rarely saw cajun/creole cuisine restaurants much less on menus. That changed in early 80s when people began to realize Mardi Gras, crawfish, and cajun cuisine was good for tourism. I don't remember anyone talking up the merits of Texas except when income or sales tax increases were up for vote. Of course, the opposite was true for property taxes - no one wanted property taxes at Texas rates.

There is a pretty long list of legislation passed that benefits S La (notably NOLA and BR) and not N La. Casinos is one. The legislation was for river boats that must actually leave port for periods of time. Except for NOLA, which was the only city allowed to have a land-based casino. Huey Long wanted LSU to be the Harvard of the South and did everything he could legally and illegally to make it happen. Consider LSU has its own system comprised of BR-campus, 3 tiny campuses that get scraps for funding, 2 hospitals, and a law school. Meanwhile, the ULS system has to split its funding among 9 small-medium sized universities.

Honestly I'd rather they have campaigned for independence as a separate State than as a member of Texas. I don't think that would have been financially possible even then.

- Never heard the crawfish bias before. We ate them in the 60s in NE La. Crawfish farming became more popular in the late 80s creating more supply.
- The whole mardi gras thing is BS in Monroe. It has very little economic impact. Tourism? Really?
- There has been cajun/creole food served in NE La all my life going back to the 60s.

My Parish property taxes + my state income taxes are greater than what they would be in Texas. Texans get MUCH more bang for their buck than Louisiana residents.

I bet Texas is glad that the secession didn't happen.
