Overall atmosphere at La Tech and at the Joe

It had been a few years since I visited for a home La Tech football game. We had tickets to the Southern Miss game and was really excited about going and to soak up the atmosphere. How disappointed I was to be there and to see that High School games have more of a atmosphere than at Tech. We got there early for the tailgating and did walk around a bit around the stadium. There were a few festivities but nothing really to brag about. I chalked it up to a late arriving crowd and couldn't wait for the students to come, fill the student section and make the stadium a really bad place for the opposing team. Again, severely disappointed. We sat on the "alumni" side and it was the quietest crowd I have been around in many years. No excitement..... nothing. The student section was about 1/3 filled and they could have cared less as well. The game ended up being delayed due to weather and once play resumed, many of the student side left and there was noticeably a smaller crowd on the alumni side. To be frank, it was embarrassing! What has happened to Tech? We previously had thought about making the trip from Texas back to Ruston for homecoming, etc. but quickly gave up on that idea. So disappointed in the overall experience! is this a product of the team not being that good this year or has the support just eroded over time to a level that competes with Texas high school ball? Not sure I will make the effort to ever come back again. What has happened?

Where have you been the last 3 years? Game day experience has improved leaps and bounds. MSU was probably the best I have ever seen tailgating, hype, excitement, until the second quarter when we started getting our teeth kicked in. Atmosphere has been horrible this year because we are horrible, in case you haven't noticed. We have lost 4 HOME games and before Saturday led in every game in the 4th but the MSU game and LOST. Hard to get excited about that. Come back next year...

Southern Miss. Its supposed to be a rivalry but it's not. Holtz puts up about as much of a fight as a bride on her honeymoon. Cant expect to have much an atmosphere in a "rivalry" like that. Oh yeah, I forgot. We really suck too, so there's that.

Nothing will beat the atmosphere at Aillet for that 1990 Colorado State game.

But, we have had others come close over the years. That 2001 Rice game where we led 35-0 and then almost lost! was electric, first for us, then for their 1,000 or so fans they had that day. There were some great crowds, game-day atmospheres for several Fresno State games too. That Hawaii game when they were ranked and we lost in OT was an exciting night of football. Hey....maybe the opponents have something to do with it, especially from the old WAC days.

This year has been horrible. It was mostly dead for NSU....the start of the Moo State game was great, but that fizzled. And every other home game has been more like a funeral home than a football stadium. Maybe all of Tech Nation, from the team to the fans to everyone is just in a collective funk this year.

Hoping against hope....talk about going out on a limb....but if we beat UTEP then maybe, just maybe, we'll have a small, but excited crowd for UTSA.

Student attendance and participation at college athletic events has been on a sharp decline for some time now. Young folks today would rather sit in their dorm rooms or apartments and "watch" on social media while playing their video games. Even highly ranked teams are experiencing a decline in student attendance and a definite high rate of half time departures. Here are a couple of articles from 2015 with data.

Re: Overall atmosphere at La Tech and at the Joe

I honestly believe part of the problem with college football has to do with all the "faux injuries" that we see in EVERY game. Faux injuries eat up a lot of time, and kill the momentum of a game. For instance, against FAU the game was stopped at least 10 to 15 times for Faux (and sometimes outright fake) injuries. What makes 'em "Faux Injuries" you ask? Too many players are laying on the ground for between 1 to 5 minutes, and then walking off the field like they are going to a high school dance. And then you see them return to the game on the very next possession.

This exact scenario happened to LA Tech's #33, Da'Von Washington Saturday afternoon. He laid on the field pretending to be hurt for at least 5 min --acting like he was dying-- only to return to the game very soon afterwards. Others did it too, on both teams. Meanwhile, every time one of these guys lays there like a pig in mud, game play gets stopped and us fans have to sit thru at least 2-3 minutes of TV commercials.

If you are going to lay on the field for 5 minutes and require people to escort you off, then you need to have a broken leg or be damn near dead. I know these kids are millennials, but some of this attention seeking is absurd.

The NCAA needs to make a new rule that says, "If you have to be helped off the football field for a supposed injury, then you can't return to the game for the rest of the current quarter nor the following quarter". Let's call it an "health evaluation period." We want to make sure that you are properly evaluated before you are allowed to return to the game.

So for example, if you have to be escorted from the field in the 2nd quarter, you won't be allowed to play again until the 4th quarter at the earliest.

A rule like that would stop some of this time killing fake injuries. It wold also stop people from using fake injuries in an attempt to slow a fast paced offense.

Hold them out for two plays instead of just one. Maybe even hold them out until the next defensive series. Something needs to be done.

Remember when football helmets were flying off players' heads at a ridiculous rate? Well, once the NCAA started requiring a player to sit out the next play after losing a helmet, guess what happened? The helmets stopped flying off, didn't they.

We'll see the same results if a new "injury rule" is instituted. Just make any player --who has to be escorted from the field by handlers-- sit out the rest of the current quarter as well as the following quarter. At that point, I GUARANTEE you all the Faux Injuries will stop, and the games will speed up.

Screw that. They are usually sitting out a couple of plays anyway. Under the guise of "it will give us more time to evaluate the player", make 'em sit out the rest of the current quarter as well as the next quarter. That'll stop it cold. It will no longer be an issue.

Kind of like in soccer when a guys gets his toe stepped on then he flails and screams like he has been shot. I think both sports should do something to curb the faking of injuries. Have the player subbed out and require that he be taken to the locker room for evaluation. Maybe that would keep them honest.

Fourth quarter tradition at MSU has Davis Wade rocking.

It started several years ago when Dan Mullen referenced the song in his requests for fans to hang on and keep believing. Now it's part of every game.
