Source says Murdoch has not been high on the RSNs for several years. Same old media story: rights fees rising at a faster rate than affiliate revenue.

Some time this year ATT bought Root Sports which was a local sports channel here in Houston.

Thanks. I didn't know that. The Astros and Rockets had moved their games there from Fox Sports SW.

I knew AT&T owned DirecTV but did not notice exactly when Root changed its name to ATTSN.

Some of the assumptions in this story are off base. A few have some validity. You can also tell he doesn't really know what he's talking about when he talks about the possibility of a "regional version of College Gameday in SEC Country." Yeah, it's called the SEC Network. It's as if he's never seen it on a Saturday morning in the fall or knows that ESPN has a stake in it.

What I would love to know is what the fine print looks like in some of the Fox RSN agreements with local market schools and professional teams. Is there some type of standard language that would allow a buyer of a Fox RSN to walk away from an agreement in the event the RSN was sold? ESPN would likely want to hold on to many of those deals, but they would also love to walk away from others.

There is no way ESPN wants to pay as much for third tier rights to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State sports as Fox was paying. In the next few years what type of impact could this have on the Big 12 or Texas' Longhorn Network. Because ESPN isn't going to want to throw that type of cash around it's also going to take another player out of the big bidding on some local rights agreements. They'll drive the number being negotiated way down.

This deal also confirms something that people really knowledgeable with Disney's finances have been saying about ESPN for the past several years. You've seen the best reporting in Sports Business Daily. Cord Cutters have put margin pressure on ESPN, but the network isn't going away. This deal confirms that belief.

    https://www.recode.net/2017/12/14/16...rupert-murdoch

For the past couple years, ESPN has been stuck with a seemingly unsolvable problem: It is on the hook for expensive sports deals that keep getting more expensive. At the same time, its subscriber base — and the revenue that generates from subscription fees and ad sales — has been melting.

ESPN’s proposed solution is a surprising one: It is going to put itself on the hook for even more expensive sports deals.
