Yeah, I know. I just have always been a big believer of playing in North Texas as much as possible. Between UNT and SMU having a three year stretch where we were in the Metroplex at least once a season plus the prospect of being in the Frisco, HOD or Armed Forces Bowl every season would be ideal.
Not until after the season is over. It's very common for coaches to get calls from consultants and/or agents within hours of their regular season ending. Because any given school can be on either end of that relationship they tend not to deal with those that violate that unwritten rule. There are exceptions but Sonny was not one of them.
There is a timeframe between May and July each year where younger coaches, including coordinators will fly to Dallas or Atlanta or Denver and meet with multiple firms to go over career goals and where they might see themselves over a 1 year or 3 year or 5 year timeframe. Many coaches use the opportunity to do mock interviews and get career advice. From those meetings consultants have an idea of where a coach might be a good fit and have an interest.
IDK. Close to 10 maybe. My point was not about our numbers, but SMU's potential. We have ALWAYS recruited and done well in East Texas and the Metroplex. We have more players on our roster from south of I-10 than from North Louisiana. Think that has something to do with quantity?
No telling how much talent gets over looked from Lufkin to Ft. Worth every year. Hunter Lee and Blake Martin were perfect examples.
So Dykes has about a week to scout us, learn his team, and deal with pissed off players that wanted one of the assistant coaches to get the job. Got to think the pressure on Holtz to win has dramatically increased.
Louisiana is consistently one of the top 5 states producing football recruits in the nation. Per capita, it's not even close, Louisiana is far and away #1 in the nation. The other states that consistently are in the top 5 are Texas, Florida, and California, and several states, namely Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, take turns being that 5th state. Someone said it well "quality over quantity." There are more people in DFW (7 million) than in the entire state of Louisiana (4 million). But, handpick the very best of the best HS players from both states and create a team, and when they play, little ole Louisiana will match Texas play for play. It's still 11 vs. 11 on the field.
The real point is this, and I have mentioned this before, Tech sits in a pretty good spot re: recruiting. Our home turf for recruiting is TWO of the top 5 states producing football recruits. We should be good in football.
