    Wreck on I20

I20 is shutdown before Kilgore with a multiple vehicle accident involving an 18 wheeler, travel trailer and other vehicles. Have been sitting for 11/2 hours and just told to expect another 1-2 hour wait. If you are going to game you should take hwy 80 etc.

Then Tech fans should consider taking old Hwy 80 around that section if they can.

I-20 doesn't need anymore construction. However, it wouldn't hurt if one more lane were added in both the east and west bound lanes between the I-20/US-80 interchange in Terrell and Shreveport.

Adding more lanes does not reduce traffic congestion.

Living in Houston for 41 years I can attest that that is correct for congested city traffic. However, out on the open road it can. One case I am really familiar with is I-10 east between Houston and a little town called Winnie. From Winnie to Beaumont it is still 2 lanes each way but is being widened to three. Traffic moves much better on the new three lane section from Houston to Winnie. The third lane is semi-tractor trailer free and generally they stay to the far left lane and they still have a lane to pass without completely blocking the inter-state. This lets traffic pass and move much easier.

TXDOT has plans to add an extra I-20 lane in both directions.

    Re: Wreck on I20

We witnessed two accidents on I-45 south of Dallas. One was when a red Camaro was accelerating to merge into the heavy traffic...I was easing back to allow him in, in front of me...several cars were behind him, also accelerating to merge, when the red Camaro changed his mind and slammed on his brakes....Ouch! Pieces of red fiberglass pelted our SUV, as did the dark gray of the car that plowed the Camaro in the azz!

The other wreck was a one-vehicle event. Some idiot in an ugly blue Dodge Ram pick-em-up was too impatient for the flow of traffic in the construction zone near Coriscana (spelling?). He was dodging in and out (dodging in a Dodge), changing lanes. About 10 mins later we passed him, his new truck a total mess after he slammed into the temporary concrete barriers erected due to the construction. He wasn't hurt...standing there scratching his head, wondering what happened.

I said, welcome to Dallas! Two wrecks and we weren't even in Dallas yet!

Oh, we stayed in Houston and made the drive up and back....made for a long day....since our granddaughter was having surgery Thursday morning. Poor baby, had a hernia from birth that had to be dealt with. Grandparents (us) had to watch the other grands while the parents did the surgery thingy. She is fine and is home resting now. It's what grandparents do, ya know. It's in the Instruction Manual.

Yes -- but they also attract more cars. The phenomenon is called "induced demand".

Our friend and colleague CaseyDawg is an expert on it.

    I agree, to a point.

Additional lanes between cities can help move traffic better. Additional lanes within cities do not. Like, never.

Yes it attracts cars, which are taken off the surface streets. Yes, it also attracts growth in businesses which leads to more cars.

I think that's what I said. City traffic just fills up the additional lanes. You would think tolls might reduce traffic on the "tolled" road, but no. The west side of Houston is where all of the development is. The Harris County Toll Road on the west side pays for all of the other toll roads plus a very expensive bridge on the east side which is hardly used. It is stop and go for about 5-10 miles at rush hour. Now we have another (State of Texas) toll road further west and the developers are filling in the pastures (we call it the Katy Prairie) as fast as they can. It will be jammed within five years. Of course we have a novelty in Texas called Frontage Roads between the exits where businesses build. There are very few freeways or toll roads without them.
