    Keith Jackson has passed away

One of the best...perhaps THE best...play by play broadcaster ever!

Absolutely loved listening to him call a game.

Agreed. Keith Jackson was simply the best. He WAS college football. Nobody else comes close, and never has.

Got a chance to stand in back of broadcast booth when Keith and Frank Broyles were broadcasting a Tech playoff game many, many years ago. Only real memory is how professional they both were.

Seriously? Wow! What year was that, the early '70's? I remember watching Tech play in those playoff games, and some others when ABC would do some regional telecasts. But, I don't remember who the TV guys were and certainly had no clue that the great Keith Jackson called one of our games. I'll say again...Wow!

Someone, please, find and make public a copy of that broadcast.

Here is Jackson's first college football broadcast in 1958 - Washington State vs. Stanford. He is on camera in the first few minutes going over rule changes.

Very interesting footage. Jackson did an amazing job, never missing a beat and never at a loss for words. And he did the entire broadcast by himself.

Some interesting notes about this 1958 broadcast:

    - The crowd that day was "in excess of 20K"
    - Washington St "College" won 40-6
    - Stanford was still know as the "Stanford Indians". Stanford's nickname was changed to "the Cardinal" in 1973.
    - The 2-pt conversion was introduced to college football for the first time in 1958. (The NFL didn't adopt the 2-pt conversion until 1994.)
    - In the pregame talk, Jackson says that the timeouts each team can have has been reduced to 4 in a half
    - One-armed blocking: Offensive blockers could only have one hand/arm on defensive players
    - According to Jackson, players can now re-enter the game once during each period

It really is amazing stuff. The bios I've seen on Jackson say that he began working for ABC Sports in 1966. For him to have gotten the Monday Night Football job in 1970 he must have been doing ABC regional college football games in the late 60s, although his bios don't list that work.

It's a shame you don't see him on any national football broadcasts in the 60s. He was so much better than virtually every play by play man of that era - Chris Schenkel and Bill Fleming on ABC and Curt Gowdy at NBC. He was also better than Lindsey Nelson at CBS.

MLB put together Jackson's greatest baseball calls from the 70s and 80s.
