SI Spotlights Tech’s Ryan Allen
Sports Illustrated ‘s CHARLES P. PIERCE spotlighted the performance of Patriots’ “fifth-year pro out of Louisiana Tech named Ryan Allen” in an “an old-fashioned 1930-ish punting duel” in a dissective story of the Patriot’s special teams’ play in the come-from-behind, 24-20, on-to-the-Super Bowl victory yesterday.
“Allen had beaten Nortman in a punter’s duel when it mattered” he wrote. And he went on to cite Coach Bill Belichick talking about Ryan: “Ryan made a lot of big plays...It was key for us.”
The story also gives some interesting evolvement of the role of punting in the NFL.

Re: SI Spotlights Tech’s Ryan Allen
Punting is one of the things I really think got the Saints to the Super Bowl in 2009. In that game Morstead was part of ensuring every drive the Vikings had was a very long one. Everyone made a big deal about how the Vikings dominated the yardage totals in that NFCCG against the Saints but the punts and turnovers ensured that the Saints had to go far fewer yards to score than the Vikings did. Punting yards COUNT and return yards COUNT. They are not yards anyone is going to talk about after the game but in that case they made a difference.
Allen ensured on those last three punts that the Jags had to go 90+ yards to score each time and in each case they kept giving the ball back to New England with favorable field position.
