Wow! That was really, REALLY good. It was a great stroll down memory lane. I enjoyed it very much. Well done by Teddy and JJ.
One note from the video: Andy Russo said LA Tech had the 2nd winningest mens basketball program in the country during the 1980's behind only North Carolina. Frankly, if that's not a mistake, I'm shocked.
LA Tech was unquestionably one of the winningest schools in the country then. Most of our fans (even those who were fans in the 1980's) don't realize this fact. It was because we dominated games IN THE PAINT back then and had good guards.
In the 1990's and beyond we started focusing just on signing good guards and we've been shut out of NCAA tournaments ever since.
There was about a 5 or 6-year stretch when we were among the Top 10 winningest teams in the nation.
But most of all those teams were a blast to watch. Completely unselfish....incredible passing. Many a fast break where the ball never touched the floor, it was 2 or 3 crisp passes and a thunderous dunk at the end. Awesome team defense. It wasn't just Big Willy swatting balls into the blue seats either. Those guys played defense with their feet....they knew how to move to stay in perfect defending position, and they helped too. Lots of steals by a Dawg coming from the blind side.
And the best basketball ever played in the TAC were the two games vs. Lamar and USL when on those nights, all three teams could have beaten anyone in the nation, including #1 ranked Georgetown with Patrick Ewing. Lamar hit 30 of 30 from the FT line...and still lost! We won both of those games, but had to bring our A++++ game to do it.
And there was lil ole McNeese too....with Joe Dumars. Four VERY good teams in the old Southland Conference.
Russo needs to go into the Tech Hall of Fame, sooner rather than later.
So does Randy White
