Overall, I agree. Gun control may reduce gun deaths. Fewer law abiding citizens will shoot attackers because the attacker will have a gun that is more lethal than the one a law abided is allowed to carry.
The stat religion is convenient when needed, but only when it supports a certain cause.
What cause is that? I am merely advocating these stats for educational purposes. People need to understand the risks they are taking when they bring guns into their home. Most people that buy guns for protection, think they are making themselves safer, but that is just not true. And realizing that fact in itself might make you safer.
Also:
The likelihood of injury when there was a self-defense gun use (10.9%) was basically identical to the likelihood of injury when the victim took no action at all (11.0%)," Hemenway and co-author Sara J. Solnik.
Looking at what happened after people took action to prevent a crime, Hemenway and Solnik found that people were far better off either running away, or calling the cops if possible, rather than attempting to stop a crime with a gun. "Running away and calling the police were associated with a reduced likelihood of injury after taking action; self-defense gun use was not," they write.
