It is astonishing that some of our fans have watched LA Tech football for many decades and still haven't learned that our QBs almost always significantly improve in their junior and senior seasons. Smith had one of the most productive sophomore seasons in school history; he SHOULD have a spectacular redshirt junior season (especially since the baseball distraction is finally gone).
FAU will likely have major QB problems this coming season. Last year's starter Jason Driskel, quit the team after the bowl season and announced he would no longer play football. Yep, only a junior, Driskel won 10 straight football games and then walked away to focus on his engineering studies.
To compound the problem, FAU's backup QB De'Andre Johnson, is recovering from surgery to remove blood clots from his arm. Johnson will most likely battle Chris Robison, a redshirt freshman. Robison ran the scout team after transferring to FAU from Oklahoma, where he had been dismissed from the Sooners after his arrest for public intoxication.

It's not that some of us don't know history. It's that some of us watched what appeared to be lack of ability to throw simple passes, when to run, and how to slide. He is a great athlete so some of us chalk it up to coaching. Only one of the QBs you mention was actually coached by our coaches. I'm not sure that one didn't overcome his coaching rather than learn from it. Which of the Holtz QBs improved their junior season? Also, 6-6 is not productive even for a sophomore IMO.
I'll say the same exact thing I said prior to the 2016 season when I questioned Holtz's choice of Higgins as our starting QB. And it's this: I hope Holtz is right and Smith (in this case) turns out to be a good (great?) QB and enjoys a great year. I also admitted then, and will again, Holtz was right to stay with Higgins. I hope I can say the same thing re: Smith.
We all have to hope that J'Mar Smith works out to be a great QB, and that he doesn't get injured, because Holtz has bet the farm on it. The lack of alternatives in the QB depth chart is almost unforgivable.
agree 100% -- so many posters live in a fantasy world. most of us saw the talent he has and the offers from SEC teams from high school-- not going to bring up the tired posts about injuries to team etc etc. I will take his talent and full year of experience --first time in years we are starting a gifted QB with experience in our system. No way you or I can educate the know it alls-- they wanted Higgins benched and I always trusted Tim-Skip amd various coaches-- so many posters so much smarter than Tim ..... so much for my promise to myself to ignore the folks I absolutely do not understand their attitude --
Another first for Tommy's resume... First time without a single article written about spring football practice.
Either our SID is that lazy, or Skip has gotten super secretive/paranoid like Harbaugh at Michigan.
Our HC is a micro manager and his boss (our AD) is scared of him.
