That's the problem. It is institutionally impossbile to earn your way to the dance as it stands.

The only way to fix it is to blow it up and start over. Each regular season champion and conference tournament champion should get in. RPI, SOS, and record should all be considered after that for at large bids. If the P5 conferences don't like it, they can join a G5 conference and even things out. I would gladly switch places with any P5 program complaining about it.

If there is going to be a selection...I like rewarding the conference AND reg season champs. After that it gets hairy because of all the metrics. The value of wins and losses is whats forever at question. Is 1 win vs a very good G5 school worth more than 1 win against an avg P5 school? If they cant mathematically figure out how to value W/L or Home/Away/Neutral...itll never be fair. And if itll never be fair...how can you have true competition?

30 years ago it was a fair competition -

    Now it's not -

You want "fair" go to NO at-larges and only regular season conference champs get auto-bids and play the bracket out

The biggest negative I see to D80's "300 system" is also it's biggest positive: It's geographical. That's great for drawing crowds and regional interest. But, if 3 teams in the south are capable of making the Final Four, only 1 can make it under this system. (I think that's the way I read D80's post.)

Correct! Some years it could work out that way. But, if, using the South as an example, UNC, Duke and Kentucky are all legit FF quality they might as well play and eliminate each other in the South Regional. Only ONE of them would win the NC anyway. The team that emerges should, in theory, win the Final Four, if indeed they are the best. Seeding would keep the higher seeds apart as long as possible. But, yeah, the "Final Four" of that South Regional might end up being the real Final Four.

But, the Big 10 and the Big East often have legit FF contenders, as does the Big 12, especially Kansas. So, the winners of the other regionals would also be very, very good and capable of winning it all.
