Football Where are they now? Gary Crowton

Was thinking back about our former HCs and wonder where Crowton went to. Looks like he moved out to St. George, UT (approx 82k) to be an OC at the high school level. He doesn't stay put very long.

Gary Crowton had a nice career going for about 15 years, between 1995 and 2010. After that, he's been associated with some very bad football. The Bookends: His 1994 GA Tech team finished 1-11, and his 2011 Maryland team finished 2-10. After that, his only winning season (as OC) was in 2015 at Southern Utah (8-4). A brilliant offensive mind gone to waste.

The first sentence says it all. A strange career will soon have a new chapter.

    A few thoughts......

That's a lot of moves for a family with seven children.
He stayed at Tech as long as anywhere else, 4 seasons. Same as BYU and LSU.
Was a great hire at Tech, wish he would have stayed longer. He probably could have retired here; if he kept recruiting at the same level. Fun to watch his Bulldogs.
Probably a good thing he left to make room for AD Dooley. Albeit he left too early.
The 1997 team should have went to a bowl game.

You do know that Crowton wasn't replaced by Dooley? He was replaced by Jack Bicknell III, who was serving as an assistant on Crowton's staff. JBIII was our coach for 8 seasons (1999-2006) before Dooley arrived. But I agree that Crowton probably should have stayed longer. However, "defense" wasn't his strong suit.

Not his strong SUIT indeed. His defenses regularly got completely undressed by opponents.

We haven't had a coach since Joe Raymond who valued defense.

The number of moves surprised me. But I guess it's normal for collegiate & nfl coaches.

Dooley built good defenses. Holtz as well, starting last season our depth started to show. This year we are two deep with starting caliber guys and our recruiting has been better and better.

Why did it take five years for him to build depth on defense? He recruited bad jucos and Grad transfers for five years. How many staring defensive players this year came in freshman? 4?

He was less than honorable in his Tech departure. He asked that we sign all of the assistants to contracts for stability and then bolted leaving us with a staff we had to pay or use. So we had no real choice but to promote from within

Gary Crowton was ahead of his time. He was on the cutting edge of offensive football in the mid-90s. His problem, however, is that he didn't keep up with the competition. When everyone else caught him and starting passing him, he didn't adjust to the new philosophies and styles of offensive football that are so successful today.

Of course, I remember the Bicknell years. Probably should have worded my thoughts more clearly. My point is if Crowton wouldn't have left when he did we probably never would have hired Dooley. While Dooley was not a great coach he did try to bring us up to the present as AD. While the Bicknell years were pretty brutal they did allow for Dooley, who made improvements that aided in the winning terms of Dykes and Holtz.

That sounds like the perfect summary of his career.

D.R. didn't care about football. He allowed Bicknell to stay way too long. He wasted an opportunity after we joined the WAC.
