Racism, Russia, Comey, and a very disliked opponent. Took the confluence of all 4 of those factors for him to win while losing the popular vote.
A liberal calling Trump voters racists. How original. Here are the racists...
I'll add two.
Add Eric Holder and Susan Rice.

I agree there was a confluence of factors that resulted in the 2016 election of Donald Trump. "A perfect storm" if you will. The first hints occurred in the Republican primaries, especially when Jeb Bush was eliminated early and resoundingly, and Trump just kept winning and/or hanging around primary after primary. Another hint was that Cruz and Kasich were the last of the rivals to fall. Two guys on the edge of the swamp, not chest deep in it. Then throw in the success of Bernie Sanders, and anyone with their eyes open could see there was something different going on in the election process. Clearly voters, both right and left, were sending a message we are tired of the same old entrenched political scene in DC.
Then in the general election it came down to an ultra outsider, Trump vs. the ultra swamper, Krooked Killary. And throw in the fact that Krooker Killary is so disliked, even by many leftists and left-voting people, and her nomination also motivated some-time conservative voters to get out and vote in '16, and Trump also created his own niche of voters, and the results are not as surprising as first thought.
Heading into the general election the focus was on the EC, and the enormous advantage the 'craps have in California, New York, and other big states. The pundits correctly identified the key battleground states: Florida, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina...and Trump campaigned hard in those states, while the arrogant Killary virtually ignored them, assuming....
That was 2016. The POTUS campaign of 2020 will be a totally different animal. Trump will lose his re-election bid if he adopts the arrogant stance of Killary. He better realize that '16 was not about HIM, per se. He was an instrument, a tool, to deal the DC establishment a blow. And he better realize he can't just depend on his base, and the coalition he has built....like with the labor unions, for instance. They will stand by him as long as he keeps throwing them bones. Right now they like his trade and economic policies because it benefits them.
Fortunately, for Trump, the 'craps have continued their deep-state self-destruction. Morons like Schumer, Pelosi, and Maxine "munch mouth" Waters, are doing more for his re-election bid than he is. But, it's a looooong way to 2020! If the 'craps get their act together they will win back the WH. And ironically, the best thing that could happen to the 'craps is to get absolutely smoked in the 2018 mid-terms. If Pelosi and Waters et al were booted out, the 'craps would assume the favorites' role heading to 2020. Based on the polls, it doesn't appear that will happen....thankfully.
I've said it before, I'll post it again, had he run, crazy Joe Biden would be POTUS today. He missed his chance. I doubt very seriously he could earn the 'crap nomination now. His time has passed, and voters are looking for new blood...on both sides.
Back to Trump....
He has got to tone down the bombastic rhetoric. I know that grates against his personality, but he's a business man. He knows how to "play the game" when he has to. If he is serious about getting re-elected, he can't rely just on doing a good job. There are some swing voters, a relative small, but important group, that like his policies, but don't like him. Hello!!! Can you say "Krooked Killary and being the most disliked candidate in recent history!?" IF (big "if") Trump becomes more "presidential" he will win re-election in 2020.

“Donald Trump’s 2016 electoral win was more accurately predicted by racist searches on Google than any other data set.
On a map, the US states with the highest searches for racist things such as jokes compared with a map of Trump's biggest wins were remarkably similar.”
Don't agree with a liberal...
You MUST be a racist.
