We really need to form a master plan for the stadium. I'm happy with the improvements that have been made. They are great. However they have been added without what seems like a cohesive plan for the look of the stadium. Our endzone facility, pressbox/suites, and stadium don't really fit with each other too much right now. Add in the fact that our stadium is asymmetrical and it shows that we have a lot of work to do to make the stadium better.

For athletics our fees are almost nothing. And our student body has the opportunity to vote on proposed fees. The last time a proposed fee had less than 65% support in a student vote was back in May, 1992. I'm not aware of any proposed fee going back to the 70s that's actually failed when put before the Tech student body. Every vote from the fees that paid for the Lambright Center until now.

I think it's safe to say that a large student fee that would pay for major facilities upgrades would easily pass our student body.

Easier to ask the students too pay, otherwise the AD has to sell something or ask the boosters for more money.

I won’t argue against raising fees because our fees are the lowest or among the lowest in the country. However, I agree that we have to have leadership who is willing to call and visit people who don’t sit in box seats. With unlimited local and long distance calling, it cost them no more to call those folks and at least ask.

Of course the students will vote for it. Easy to vote for a fee increase when your parents are probably the ones paying for it.

I see the desperate need for an athletics fee. But I think we need to carefully consider the effect on students who don't care about sports, and whether we can prove to them that this will benefit their academic career.

    Half of me is laughing

I do think academics and athletics are tied together in the modern world. What I want to see is a focus on both. If I had to choose, I'd have to say I'd mirror Rice: terrible athletics (with a very notable exception), but as a university, almost above reproach. A couple billion dollars will do that though.

I don't want to be like Alabama, which is not a university. Auburn or Clemson might be a good example in some fields.

First game in Joe Aillet (Tech) Stadium.

    https://archive.org/details/1968LaTech

It is in B&W and appears to be coaches game copy as the first part is all Tech offense and the second focuses on the defense. Looks like it is played a little slower
    than filmed

ECU ran the old single wing.

If the link doesn't work just cut and paste.

I watched the first 7 min of this and honestly, it looks like an ECU defensive "highlight" reel. It was 7 min. of LA Tech offensive possessions. And we never even see an ECU offensive play. That's weird. Secondly, Terry Bradshaw and the Tech offense were awful, for the most part. You can tell that Bradshaw has a strong arm, but he also made some very bad throws in this game. I think I counted 4 punts by Tech, just in the first 7 min.

Maybe it gets better after the first 7 min.

Like I said, it appeared to be for the coaches to use and study. The offense does pick up. Buster Herren (no.31) scored 3 TDs. It was the first game of the season and TB's first real start. A lot of over thrown balls and one interception, etc. It was of interest to me because I was there.

Some of the other numbers: 33 was Richie Golmon; 44 was Ken Liberto; 43 was Tommy Spinks; 87 was Larry Brewer; 30 was Bubba Sanchez. I don't know who 35 was, but he made one outstanding run. These are all from memory so I can't recall everyone else.

Tech was hoping to raise enough money from suite rentals to pay off everything in just a few years. Our leadership had to negotiate with potential suite holders, and the market didn't allow Tech to bring in those types of dollars. Then, as I understand it, some of the money from suite rentals is going back into the budget. The facility enhancement fee is covering the payments from a relatively small internal loan. It's not anything out of the ordinary.

The fact is Tech is very conservative when it comes to these types of things. I would even call it ultra conservative - to a fault in my opinion. As a university Tech has very little bonded debt and has stayed away from debt at almost all costs over the decades. There are downsides to that type of thinking.

We have students fees that are way too small. And facilities plans that are often piecemeal and can be described as anything but ambitious.
We hired a guy with almost no experience in the business and we are way over paying him to bring down our LTAC giving and our scheduling.

Maybe they will consider creating a space for student tailgating that has easy access and unused parking.

The student facility enhancement fee is being used to pay off the bonds for our south end zone at around $650,000 per year for the next 21 years, a figure which is actually more than just a relatively small internal loan. Our athletic dept borrowed $11,054,000 from the University Foundation to build the pressbox and suites. That loan is at 4% or over $444,000 interest per year or $34,000 PER SUITE (13 suites) per year. Do you really think that those suites are leased for over $34,000 each. If not then we arent even able to make the interest payments much less transfer money into the regular budget OR using any to pay down the debt. Our salvation lies in that there is NO scheduled repayment set up to repay the Foundation. So, if unable to make annual interest payments or pay off any of the principal amount the debt just goes up and up. This is what I was referring to when mentioning the financial web we have woven.

Our home schedules are so “hot and cold” that the value of those suites will have considerable variation and (I would think) be a somewhat unpredictable source of revenue.
