Dunigan was deplorable until his senior year, but he got better with time. I recall watching my fellow LA Tech students vehemently booing him with every single incompletion early in 1982 due to his poor performances in 1979-1981. He shut his critics up quick his SENIOR season, just like GRADUATE Sokol (couldn't get on the field at Iowa), GRADUATE Driskel (Florida fans deeply hated him), Junior-RS Higgins (daily berated on BB&B until his senior year- one of Tech's best QB seasons ever!), and last year's Soph-RS Smith (whose stats are worlds better than Dunigan's at this point).

Young, inexperienced QBs make lots of mistakes (like Freshman Savior To Be QB Nick Isham in 2011, who transferred) He too eventually got better and had a great SENIOR season at Division 3 Cal Lutheran.
Those numbers are worst than I remember them being. I did say he was the INT king!

In 1980 we traveled to Starkville for an early season game vs. Moo State, who was ranked and really good that year. As I recall they beat Nebraska in the Sun Bowl that season, finishing 10-2. We lost that day, 31-11, but Dunigan wowed the Moo State fans who asked us afterwards, "want to trade QBs?" Of course, none of we fans had such authority, but it demonstrated how Dunigan passed the eye test.

The Baylor game in S'port, we lost 28-21, but again, Dunigan awed the crowd, including the Baylor fans. BU had a lunatic LB named Mike Singletary who terrorized our offense all night. Dunigan, under center since the shotgun was seldom used back then, would turn sideways, one foot back, so he could get the snap and side step BU's crashing DTs who destroyed our OL all night. Running for his life EVERY play he still managed nearly 400 yds passing and a couple of TDs.

In 1979, as a freshman, he played only because our starting QB, Mark Buchanan, I think...got hurt. That was the Larry B. season and throwing the ball was not high on the priority list.

Anyone booing Dunigan in 1982 was either a fool, not a Tech fan, just plain ignorant, or some combination of all three. The pros were salivating over the prospects. And while the best he got from the NFL were invitations to attend camps as an undrafted free agent, the CFL was all over him. Edmonton drafted him.

The point, as it relates to today is, Ja'Mar Smith we are told (because I haven't seen it yet), is a great athlete with a strong arm. That's the scoop anyway. Turn him loose. Let's see what he's got.

So they'll sit on a bench somewhere else. Do they think they're just going to walk on to some great P5 team and immediately get the starting nod?

It has to be a compliment to our starters and other back ups that they don't think there good enough to beat any of them out for the starting position.

your right, but the aunt, uncle, momma, daddy, good friend playing for another team all get in his ear and tell him "man you would be starting if you were playing for &*^%* team". They are 18 year old kids, most of them make bad decisions as it is, much less when they have outside pressure.

Once signed, reality comes home to roost....they are buried on the depth chart...again.

There's not a chance in h*** Walker could play at lsu. I don't care how bad their QB situation is. He had been passed up by Aaron Allen and it wasn't particularly close. He's going to Trinity Valley CC.

it sure makes you appreciate Ryan Higgins more, doesn't it? If there was ever any one that had the rug pulled from under him and still stuck with the team, it was Ryan.
