    Why the Name Change

In the year 2000 when the University of Southwestern La changed it's name to the Univesity of Louisiana at Lafayette, I recall Dr. Ray Authement, who did not care one bit about about atheletics, saying the name would be crucial when applying for research grant dollars. In the academic world everyone goes by their official name and not the athletic branding. He said that we would no longer be Southwestern competing against Texas at Austin, North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tennessee at Knoxville ....... We'd now share the same name with those schools which will somewhat level out the playing field.

It looks like he was right about the research dollars.

Forbes? Very subjective. That's the opinion of one guy writing a story for an online publication. Kind of like rivals giving a recruit 3 or 4 stars.

    Re: Why the Name Change

UNO has slipped down the list some. There was a time when UNO was a "very good" school. Probably still is in many ways, I'm sure. Overall university rankings do not reflect the good and not-so-good in individual colleges and departments at schools. It also neglects to point out individual professors who are awesome at what they do.

I had such a professor at NSU. Yes, the school in Natchitoches. Actually, I had two! One in economics, now at the Univ of Houston, and one in BASIC programming, now at Georgia Tech. I hold three degrees from NSU, BTW. It was convenient and when I worked for IP, they paid my tuition.

My brother holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from USL. It was the only school in the region, at that time, offering a graduate degree in CS. My brother holds a BS in Math from Tulane, even though he took all the computer classes he could. Tulane did not offer degrees in computer-related disciplines back in the 1970's.

What is now known as ULL is a good school. There's a young fellow there now for the start of his freshman year. He's from Natchitoches, a graduate of the Louisiana School, he holds an associate's degree earned at NSU via dual enrollment, and he is just 17 years old. He wanted to go to Tech to major in engineering. But after careful investigation he chose ULL becomes he also wants to get into "gaming." He tells me ULL offers programming in that field. ULL got a good one in him. He is brilliant.
