    Season Openers with Skip

Well, the doom and gloom was predictable (we do it every year...myself included). We’ll find out in the next few weeks whether or not Saturday’s game is a representation of who we are.

It got me thinking about how we do in season openers.

Under skip, we’re 2-4 in season openers. The 4 losses are against P5’s and the lone FBS win was last Saturday.

Opening games are normally reacted to in a negative way by fans. The parts of the game I was hopeful for were...

    - QB play. Making the no pressure passes (I realize our OLine was bad, but not on every incomplete pass)
    - Play Calling. Our HC is our OC. Fans forget that.
    - Special Teams. SOS. It will never change until our HC let's go of special teams.
    - Defense. I was hoping for domination. Again, our HC won't let his DC coach.

A person’s greatest strength is often his recognition of his weaknesses. One day maybe Skip will realize this ability for himself.

Also, in Higgins first start as a SENIOR, he throes 2 picks and was sacked 3-times versus a FCS team.

I would like to see us take advantage of the new fair catch rule on every kickoff.

Tackling was bad. Several missed completely tackles. Several broken tackles by SA players.

I wondered why we didn't do that. Opening KO of 2nd Half - Dancy is returning the kick from inside the 5 - gets bumped up and doesn't return until the 4th quarter.

Of course, there are times when you should use this new, stupid rule to your advantage. There were many examples of it over the weekend. One game I was watching the return man had to chase the ball toward the sideline, heading toward his own goal line, he caught it at the 2, and when he turned around, he was lucky to make it to the 10.

And of course, I assume this new stupid rule requires the return team to actually catch the ball. It's not like a punt when you can signal fair catch and let the ball bounce around, right?

I saw very few occasions where the rule was utilized. I guess all of the returners think think they can get beyond the 25. Most of the time they came up short.

I agree. Save the potential for injury and guarantee that you aren’t starting in the shadow of you own goalposts.

That sounds right. On a kick off the ball, unlike a punt, is live and can be recovered by the kick-off team.

Amen. Having our most productive offensive weapon handling one of the most dangerous jobs on the field makes me nervous.
