Great pass blocking by our OL and just enough for our running game on Saturday.

I feel he almost has to be told to not run to be ignoring the gaping hole that is right in front of him on many occasions. The only reason he could be afraid of contact is probably a fear of losing a fumble due to contact. I dont think he is afraid of getting hit, in general.

This is what I posted on the CUSA board almost exactly a year ago, just before our game against USM. Not much has changed.

How does LT's defense look this year?
This is probably the best LA Tech defense we've seen since our 2011 WAC championship team. The Tech defense is solid, and is holding opponents to about 24 points per game. (A couple of Mississippi State's scores against Tech had nothing to do with the defense.) So far, it's the defense that has kept us in games. The Tech DB's are young, but real good. Starting senior safety Sedrick Cooper was CUSA Player of the week 2 weeks ago for his performance against South Alabama, but he was kicked out of the UAB game for a BS "Targeting" call. He won't be able to return until the 2nd half of the USM game.

But LA Tech's offense can't score. It's that simple. QB J'Mar Smith has not been what we had hoped for. His passing game is mediocre, and when he runs the ball he slides more than Ty Cobb. The boy is desperately afraid of contact.

Consequently, LA Tech's offense has only averaged 23 points per game against the 5 FBS opponents it has faced in 2017. That's a far cry from the 52 points per game that Tech's offense averaged just a couple of years ago. This is clearly the worst, most mistake prone offense that LA Tech has had since its miserable 4-8 record in the 2013 season. They just can't seem get their act together.

Against USM, I expect another low scoring game. Probably a 28-24 type score. And honestly, either team could win.

We can’t lose him to injury and he’s prone to fumble. Let him play his game and just win!

    Re: Our OL

23 points is pretty much the cap for the Smith-led offense. It's been very consistent for the 18 games he's started. Versus FBS opponents, that is.

In the Frisco Bowl, our sunshine pumpers were giddy over Smith's performance. Well....51 pts. We had three pick-6's, and 4th INT that set us up deep in the Red Zone, that's 28 points thanks to the defense. Let's do some math: 51-28 = 23.

This has, consistently, been the most anemic offense Tech has had in a very long time. Yes, 2013 sucked. But that was an anomaly. Prior to that, going back to some of those Dooley teams we were weak on offense. Prior to that you have to go back to...I guess the early 90's, but we had kick-butt defenses. I'm thinking of that year we lost to Bama 13-0 on two FGs and a punt return.

    23 is the magic number!

If that’s the case, can we get rid of the read option? It ain’t fooling anybody.

I was thinking the same thing. We averaged 4.0 yards per carry on 32 carries. That's not to bad. North Texas was at 3.5 yds per carry. I would have thought that would have been higher the way NT ran their off tackle and sweep against our left side.

The sacks count against them. So did ours.

The holes fill up when they know they don't have to worry about covering our QB.

I don't think he is either given how long he hangs out in the pocket. It is more of just indecision. Even when he takes off it is like a o crap maybe I shouldn't have run and then each step is calculated.

I agree with you regarding his reluctance to run. But that is a dumb comment.

Just about every qb in the NFL wouldn't qualify as a "real" athlete with your criteria.

It's really dumb of you to bring the nfl into this discussion. It's also dumb of you to claim anything but fear. He is afraid of being hit.
