    Winning CUSA

We "won" the West in Denton, and then "lost" the West one week later in Ruston.

UAB controls their own destiny and they are the only team that does. Even if they stumble once, they finish 7-1, and if we run the table, we finish 7-1, and they are western division champions by virtue of the head-to-head result. So, they have to lose at least twice.

UAB has 5 CUSA games left, two are gimmes @UTEP, home to UTSA. That leaves three possibilities: home to UNT, home to USM, and @MTSU. Provided we run the table to 7-1 (and hello USM! yeah, right), UAB has to lose 2 of those 3. They might very well lose @MTSU, especially if MTSU needs that one for their push to win the east. That leaves two home games...and UAB with the conference office's handpicked refs for all their home games is a perfect 9-0 at home since coming back from oblivion.

Of course, this is really just an exercise in "what ifs" because we are still stuck with Holtz/Smith and us getting to 7-1 in conference play is really quite a stretch. Especially with a trip to The Rock still to come. But! this is a fan board and we are allowed some creative freedom to wish, hope and speculate! So...who can beat UAB? Who has the best chance?

On paper I think UNT is the best team UAB has left on their conference slate, and who knows, maybe UAB is feeling a bit too good about themselves right now. The Mean Green just might slip one in on 'em.

If UNT beats them we get into one of those little tie breaker scenarios.

If UNT beats UAB (and I expect they will), then UAB, UNT & LA Tech can all finish in a 3-way tie at 7-1 in the CUSA west race. What happens after that, I' not sure.

    Re: Winning CUSA

My best hopeful scenario is that Tech wins out, UNT wins out, and UAB loses to UNT and USM.

I just don’t see USM doing it though this season against that UAB defense, so I circle the Middle Tennessee game. If Middle has a healthy Stockstill for the season finale in Murfreesboro, I think they could also beat UAB. But who really knows? The east is all over the map in CUSA this season.

Now if we can survive a Friday night to Boca (the embarrassment of last year should be motivation), a trip to Hattiesburg (kryptonite), and avoid a collapse against WKY to end the season...that remains to be seen. Oh and trip to MoooooState. Fandom.

    Re: Winning CUSA

I think 2018 is the year CUSA is really feeling the impact that those "waivers", (or exemptions) that CUSA and the NCAA granted UAB after the Blazers dropped football 4 years ago. I know the waivers were well intended to help UAB rebuild quickly, but they appear to have aided UAB's rebuild process almost to the point of an outright advantage.

Immediately after losing a very physical game to UAB, I heard Skip Holtz give an unusual post-game quote; something to the affect, "those were grown men that we lost to over there" (paraphrase). That comment made me curious. So, I did a little research and compared the two team's senior classes listed on their public rosters. Here's what I think Holtz was referring to, without trying to sound like he was whining:

    - UAB has 37 seniors on their 2018 roster. That's a huge number of seniors.
    - The average age of 27 of those UAB seniors (73%) is 23 yrs, 7 months as of Oct 2018. That's almost 24 yrs old.
    - The remaining 9 UAB seniors had no birth date listed in their official UAB player profiles
    - At least 12 UAB players are OVER age 24, including 4 over age 25
    - By comparison, LA Tech has 21 seniors on their 2018 roster, with an average age of 22 yrs, 6 mos
    - LA Tech's Australian punter Davan Dyer, is the only senior over 24 yrs old on Tech's roster

All, this to say, Skip Holtz may have a point. UAB appears to be a very senior heavy team this year, no doubt aided in part by those eligibility waivers that CUSA and the NCAA granted UAB back in 2015. This likely helped UAB Coach Bill Clark stockpile talent, particularly from Juco players who needed more time to develop academically and athletically. The result is, most of CUSA is pitting younger football players up against UAB's more mature --and in most cases bigger-- 23, 24 & 25 yr old starters. There's a lot of players in the NFL that aren't as old as UAB's senior class.

There is typically a pretty big physical difference between a 19 to 21-yr old player, and a 24 or 25 year old. Could this be why our OL had more trouble pass protecting against UAB that they did against LSU? Could Holtz have had a valid point after all?

Without question UAB's recruiting has been the best in school history due to their special exceptions by the NCAA. Players were allowed to keep practicing without losing any eligibility. They have a large # of D1 transfers from Auburn, Ole Miss, Louisville,...; even CUSA teams like WKU have lost veteran players who were allowed to transfer without sitting out.

Holtz knew all of this though, which was why it was truly STUPID to try to run the ball against their GROWN MEN instead of throwing quick 5-7 yard passes.

https://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/...ncaa_spri.htmlThe NCAA allows for 25 scholarships per year for football. They felt so bad for UAB they let Clark sign 45 this year, and then gave everyone on the team eligibility waivers until the return in 2017. By then, Clark plans to have 85 players on scholarship, or the maximum amount.
In the South, the NCAA is best known for taking scholarships away. In the case of UAB, the NCAA is propping up a program after its own school and board of trustees cut out its legs.
