A guy I know told me at one point, he yelled, “it’s a shame their backup is better than our starter.”
I think our offense performs much better when we go uptempo. I don’t understand why we don’t do this more often.
And what about the booing?
I am kind of watching the Houston-Jax game and Jaguar fans are apparently disgruntled, despite their 3-3 record. They were booing Bortles and the lackluster Jag offense relentlessly. And then Bortles avoids the rush, makes a good throw to WR who was still several yards short of the first down line, and made a great move and then carried a Texan DB for a few yards to move the chains....and the Jag crowd goes wild with cheers. A few plays later, the drive stalls, and the boobirds can be heard again. I know as fans we are all fickled….at times.
Yesterday I heard booing...real booing...like the kind heard at NFL stadiums at times. Maybe not all that widespread, most fans were not booing, but it was enough to be distinct and heard. From my perspective it was coming from my left, which means the section next to the band on the east side, and I heard some from the west side too. I heard some smattering of boos last year, at a couple of games, but that was obviously a handful of fans. Yesterday it was clearly many dozens, or scores, of fans.
I know what the Sunshine Pumpers will say....shame on the booers. That's it. No explanation or rationale necessary, the booers are automatically out of line and therefore guilty of over-reacting. As I posted, I did not boo yesterday. Just found it interesting....and encouraging. The bigger issue is, and what any intelligent person would ask, why are these fans booing? (we can all venture a good guess). Tech fans have long been complacent, kind of apathetic, not prone to such demonstrations of dissatisfaction aimed at a Tech team, or a player(s). Bombing/booing the zebras? Heck yeah! Tech fans do that. But, booing Tech....nah! So, why now?
Comments...…?
I did not boo either, but it was all around us in section D on the west side. The fans that stand all game in front of and around us were all sitting. I would never boo our players as they are usually doing exactly what the coach wants them to do. I would boo the coach except the players may deduct it is pointed at them.
It is exceptionally harsh to boo someone like J’Mar. True, he is not very good. But he is doing all he can with the limited skill set and ability he does have. It’s not his fault his coach is being a nitwit.
Jax has benched Bortles and brought in the back-up QB....to rousing cheers.
If players think the booing is aimed at them, then they must agree there is a reason for the fans to be upset. They know what good football looks like....they are not stupid, naïve, anything like that. If they know it is 100% on the coach(es) they would know the booing is not aimed at them....even if it is. The players would know to brush off the boos when their team runs a telegraphed draw play on 3rd and 8 and the RB is clobbered at the LOS. That is a coaching decision, and the players know it better than the fans do.
I posted I found it encouraging because it's waaaay past time for Tech fans to stand up for ourselves. This is NOT Skip Holtz's football team. This is Louisiana Tech's football team. Holtz is nothing but an over-paid employee.
That is true too. I know our players are smart enough to know the difference. And they can recognize when the fans have given up on this team improving because very few people stand when they turn around and beg for us to get fired up to watch our defense give up another 3rd and 16 conversion. The results of a coach dropping 9 into coverage and rushing 2.
I admit I booed a little.
There was something I heard worse than booing. Silence. What I fear worse than booing is the apathy setting in. You could take a nap in the Joe and wake up and not miss anything. The games are boring. I walked around for several minutes and didn’t miss anything. Games used to be fun and exciting and high energy. There was no energy anywhere. It’s like all the fun has been sucked out. Hell I'm more interested in drinking my ice tea winning free Whataburger than seeing our team play.
Our pay site specifically says that this is the fans fault. Sunshiners will blame those of us who point out inconsistencies on the field. One thing I know for sure. People on this board are some of the most loyal fans in football. Most are members of ltac, alumni, or both. Most give to the university above and beyond. Most are season ticket holders of multiple sports. Most buy tickets to give away to others. The people on this board are not the reason that Tech is in a funk.
Meant to post this earlier....I went to the Walmart here early this morning, sporting my Tech gear, and ran into a local. He's a HUGE LSU fan, and an NSU grad and supporter. Well, turns out he's related to someone who was on our homecoming court, so his wife dragged him to Ruston to support their nephew, I think she said. He knows me well enough to know I am "one of those Tech guys" and he commented on the Dawgs. He said he was very surprised we didn't bury lowly UTEP but chalked it up to the team not being motivated to play. He was at the Tech-LSU game last month, and said...."what happened to THAT Tech team?" meaning we weren't the same yesterday. Still, and this pained him to say, he said, well, Tech has it going up there in football. You guys are good and the program is getting better. If one is comparing it to poor ole NSU, then yeah, we do have it going.
I post this knowing our Sunshine Pumpers will jump on this with a, see! objective observers can see all the great things Holtz is doing, why can't our hardcore fans see it too? Maybe because hardcore fans know a lot more than a casual observer. And, if you look at the big picture, then maybe, in comparison to non-bowl, 4-8 years, someone might think, well, Tech has arrived. He's also comparing it to the woes suffered by NSU. It's been more than 15 years since NSU has reached the I-AA/FCS playoffs. Been a long drought for the Demons.
Anyway, in the interest of providing all information/opinions, I thought I would pass along his comments.
