So far, we’ve lost to #25, #23, and #10.
So far, we’ve lost to #25, #23, and #10.
In 2012 we finished 9-3, with all three losses to ranked opponents. Yes, both San Jose State and Utah State were ranked in the Top 25. And of course the Manzel-led Aggies were too.
Speaking of aTm, they host UAB this week. Should be an interesting game.
IMO, the wins say a lot more than the losses. We barely beat the two worst teams in FBS, and our signature win against North Texas has turned out to be not so signature. Oh, and that opening statement we made against South Alabama the team ULM just destroyed.
Wins against: South Alabama, Southern, NTX, UTSA, UTEP, Rice, FAU. So for the most part, we’ve beaten ESPN’s bottom 10
According to Sagarin, wins against:North Texas # 76; FAU # 94; South Alabama #165;UTSA # 175;UTEP # 181;Rice # 192;Southern # 194. Games remaining:USM # 115WKU # 156. Tech is # 102. Four Sunbelt teams are ranked higher than Tech:Appalachian St. # 45;Troy # 79;AR State # 90;GA Southern # 93. North & South Dakota St. are both ranked much higher than Tech.
What's your point?
Well, you can only win those games or lose them. And we won them.
I'd prefer it that way.
I disagree. UNT (with FAU & @UTSA remaining) will likely finish 9-3, or 8-4 at worst. That's still a very good win for us this year. Likewise, FAU (with @UNT, and hosting Charlotte remaining) is making a small comeback towards the end of the season, and will likely finish 6-6, or 7-5 if they beat UNT in Denton.
I believe both of these ROAD wins --against UNT & FAU-- will remain quality wins for LA Tech this year. Both will likely finish with winning records, and nobody's going to be laughing at that.
Interestingly, the last game FAU lost was to LA Tech, 21-13. And say what you will, but this LA Tech team plays pretty darn well on the road when Holtz actually prepares them to play (unlike the MSU loss).
In the confines of CUSA....our own little world....the road wins at UNT and FAU are quality wins. Looked at from the outside, in the bigger picture, they are "eh! okay...not bad wins."
5 of our wins came against dregs...the dregs of the dregs! Lower than dregs! A SWACer, which shouldn't even count as a Div I win, and 4 teams with a combined record of 7-34. And when you look at their 7 wins....sheesh!
So, please spare us the "Oh! look at us!" BS. It's embarrassing when you really look at it. That's it! be like Dem voters, don't look at the facts...just be happy in your ignorant bliss!
We are 7-3 and takes a ranked team to beat us! Yeah, baby!!!
That wasn’t meant as a slight to UNT. What I meant was at the time they had just beaten Arkansas and was the talk of the G5 world. Now they’ve lost to us, UAB and ....ODU, and will likely finish 3rd in the West. It was far and away our best win of the year, but it’s kind of lost some of its luster. I’d sure love to have their QB on this Tech team. It be like watching a pinball game!!
I went back to see how Dooley and Dykes compared to Holtz's wins.
Dooley won 17 games and only NIU (89) was ranked in the Top 90 per Sagarin. (6% of his wins were against the Top 90)
Dykes won 21 games and 4 were ranked in the Top 90: Idaho (86), Nevada (48), Rice (74), and Virginia (84). (19% of his wins were against the Top 90).
Holtz has won 45 games and 11 were ranked in the Top 90: ULL (83), WKU (78), UAB (80), Rice (70), Illinois (88), MTSU (81), Arkansas St (86), WKU (21), Navy (54), SMU (82), UNT (72). (24% of wins against Top 90).
So of Dooley's 17 wins, 94% were against teams ranked worse than 90.
Of Dyke's 21 wins, 81% were against teams ranked worse than 90.
Of Holtz's 45 wins, 76% were against teams ranked worse than 90.
Bottom line: only 19% of Tech's wins (16 out of 83) were against teams ranked better than 90. We pick up a ton of our wins against bad teams (81% of our total wins since 2007 were to very bad football teams).
What was the margin of victory against teams ranked 90 or less when comparing Dykes teams vs Holtz teams?
I’m reminded of the line in Major Payne....
