There are more things wrong with Tech football than just the product on the field. Holtz is primarily only responsible for what’s on the field. In my opinion in order to keep the program from imploding completely and to correct the broader problems with the program (and some other sports too) the best business decision is to relieve McClelland of his duties. Following that crucial and necessary step a new athletic director would be hired who would then require Holtz to present a plan of change to improve the product on the field. An athletic director worth his salt wouldn’t accept a line of coach talk BS that the present staff will get it together next season. Some change is needed now even if only to convey to the fans that things are being taken seriously. Besides that with Holtz’s job on the line under the new authority he might actually be properly motivated to do something significant like hire a quality offensive coordinator to change up and run the offense or compell Baker to run a somewhat more aggressive defensive at times like in my humble opinion quit rushing 3 guys on 3rd and 10+. Prevent defenses just don’t work in today’s game.
I don’t believe Holtz has it in him to do differently than he has the past two seasons. He’s super conservative and doesn’t have a trick play or even a misdirection play anywhere in his character.
This off season is critical to Tech’s football future, a 2-3 win season next year will likely cost the program 5 years of pitifulness.
I trust that Dr. Guice knows all of this and in addition he has some insightful people advising him as to the details of what all isn’t working.
