    Hawaii - know your opponent

I don't know what to think of Hawaii this year. I haven't seen them play or studied their style at all. They have some good wins and some bad losses........ They are a big question mark for me..... Here is their schedule and results:

Have one common opponent...Rice, both played the Owls at home, so it is oranges to oranges. They won by 14, we won by 15. There ya go! Dawgs will win by 1 point!

5 of their wins are against teams with 1 to 4 wins, 1 win is against an FCS team, and 1 win is against a team with a 6-6 record. Their only quality is against San Diego State.

5 of La Tech's wins are against teams with 1 to 5 wins and 1 win is against an FCS team. Our only quality win is against North Texas.

Where we differ is that we lost to a team with only 2 wins, and they didn't, but looking at their schedule, home field advantage doesn't seem like it was a huge factor.

    Re: Hawaii

Hawaii started the season 6-1, and finished 8-5, including two road wins in OT. Hawaii won in 5 OT's at San Jose St (Wow!), and in 1 OT at San Diego St. I would suggest that we don't want this game to go into OT. They appear to be very scrappy. Just the opposite of us, IMO.

They're scrappy? Well, we're most of the way to being "scrappy" too. Just need one more letter.....

Comparing Offenses, expect them to throw it and doing it well. I went to ncaa.com and compared offensive rankings.

    Louisiana Tech | Multiple

    Passing Offense
    #7 Hawaii
    #52 Louisiana Tech

Re: Hawaii - know your opponent

Our secondary needs to play their best game. They have 4 WRs that are in the Top 200 in receiving yards. Cole McDonald is very good. Almost as good as Colt Brennan.

Cole McDonald | Sophomore | QB

    Passing Yards 3790 (Rank 5)
    Passing TDs 35 (Rank 7)
    Completion per Game (Rank 10)

John Ursua | RS Junior | Wide Receiver

    Receiving Yards 1343 (Rank 5)

Cedric Byrd | Junior | Wide Receiver

    Receiving Yards 939 (Rank 34)

JoJo Ward | Junior | Wide Receiver

    Receiving Yards 865 (Rank 50)

    Marcus Armstrong-Brown | Senior | Wide Receiver

    Receiving Yards 514 (Rank 197)

Couple our “quality” of play this season with fact that Tech has never won on the football field in Hawaii, and I believe Skip’s winning bowl streak has run its course. When he reaches into the big hat this time, the rabbit is going to bite his hand.

Re: Hawaii - know your opponent

I see this game as a wash now, after looking a little more at Hawaii and reading the comments on here. I LIKE our defense, but do wish they were a rushing team instead of passing. We DO give up some big plays, but overall are stout on that side of the ball.
    Keys to a win:
J'Mar coming out of his funk and surprising all of us.
A good mix of run and pass from us - we need some downfield passes
    Our secondary stepping it up.

Their wins look about as impressive as ours and losses about the same. Skip has to step on the gas early and he tends to do that in bowl games. Just don't let it be a one score lead by us in the 4th. We play WAY too conservative to win against a team used to close games. If we try to chew up clock and run it up the middle, we will be in trouble.

Keys to the win: Be able to somewhat execute more than 3 different offensive plays. Have J’Mar be able to throw a somewhat catchable ball in the vicinity of one of our guys. Try and not hold the ball for 9 seconds before deciding that you are going to either have to throw it or run it. Try and not have more than one punt for single digits. Tell Skip it’s ok to return a punt every once in a while just for the fun of it. Have just a little consistency from the WR corps.

They will score points. If we intend to keep it close, we might want to think about doing that also.
