There coaching change went much better than SMU 's!
I've been following Tech for 30 years and I've never seen us win 10 games. Holtz has won 9 games 3 times and all other coaches combined for 9 wins just 2 other times. How unreasonable? Pretty unreasonable. Holtz should have gotten it done in 2014 though (a NW State win would have been 10 wins). Dykes probably would have gotten 10 if we went to a bowl game in 2012.
Not unreasonable at all when you consider that the team didn't lose most of the horrible losses. Our HC did with conservative play and poor clock management. That's who he is.
It's hard to get a coach here though. We seem to either be fantastic on offense and atrocious on defense or vice versa. We can never put together a complete team. We struggle to keep a good staff together. It's always something that keeps us from getting the elusive 10 wins (or more). I don't see how a program like App State can do it so consistently.... and Boise St for that matter. I wish we could find the formula.
Again, our HC has kept us from getting to 10 wins, not lack of staff or lack of formula.
FWIW, I only know of one productive assistant (not Diaz) we've lost since Holtz began using LaTech as a "buddy stop over" for members of his elite fraternity. How long have we been stuck with his OLine coach now? There's a reason some of these assistants are not moving on.
Look at how we lose games. Winning 21-20 sucks and fans won't pay to see it. The only thing worse is losing to the worst teams in the conference in Ruston.
I think we are talking about 2 different things. You are focusing on Holtz, but I'm talking about Tech football in general.
There are 19 10-win teams right now, and 9 more sitting on 9 wins with a bowl game yet to play. Potentially 28 schools will win at least 10 games this year. I'm sure all 28 will vote to forfeit a game or two, just to get back to 9 wins. They wouldn't want to be seen as being "unreasonable." Of course, that is ridiculous.
More to the point, speaking only for myself, while it would be nice! I don't expect Tech to win 10 games every year. I....and probably others too....think it's UNREASONABLE to accept us NOT winning 10, at least every now and then. It's been clearly demonstrated CUSA is the weakest of the FBS conferences. We play 8 conference games every year. We also usually play two very easy OOC opponents. Yeah, even I agree, it's not fair to expect Tech to always run that 10-game table. But 8-2? even in an average year, and 9-1 most years, means all we need is to play in, and win, the CCG, our bowl, and/or one of the tougher OOC games, and bingo that = 10!
You obviously are of the school of thought that Holtz is really not capable of winning 10. And, you're probably right. And because of that, it's unreasonable to expect it. Kind of like wanting to see a 90-year-old man, who is all of 5' 5" do a 360 slam dunk! He is simply NOT CAPABLE of it.
T1, 30 years ago teams only scheduled 10 games and not a whole bunch were running the table. Also, not near as many bowls then so only a limited few got an 11th try for 10 wins.
So the question is, can our current admin find the next 10 win coach if Holtz moves on?
