And, we hear for the next eight monrhs about the great Skip Holtz. Then settle in for another mediorce season with no conference championship. Why break the cycle?

For some reason we are always ready to play in bowl games.

UH is 5-2 at home, blowout losses to Nevada and Utah State. Best home win over 6-6 Wyoming by 4 pts. They are coming off a nice road win at 7-5 SDSU, 31-30.
But, this is about UH at home, and there is nothing particularly impressive about their home results. They've beaten, Navy, Rice, and UNLV, all with losing records, FCS Duquesne, and Wyoming.
So! all that said...if this were a real bowl game, at a neutral site...I'd like our chances given Holtz's capacity to prepare the team for bowls. But, this is nothing but a road game. So, I think it'll be close and competitive, and Holtz will find a way to blow it in the 4th qtr, as he often does.

What worries me is this: Last year, we won our last two season games and then the Bowl game. This year we lost our last two season games!! It doesn't seem like we are on a roll going into a Bowl game!!
Holtz and Smith can’t drive
Greased peg up a pigs butt we
Lose on the island

Well....I want the Dawgs to win. I can't help myself. But, I understand the sentiment expressed by PawDawg. It's more like this team is the Holtz/Smith/TMAC Dawgs, some other entity other than Tech. And, more importantly, many Tech fans, myself included in that group, are simply desirous of "something more." Is this it? If Holtz is still our coach in 2028, will we look back at a string of 15 years of 7-9 win seasons, bowling, yes, one of 80, and by then, who knows? one of 100+, never anything more? If you have a crystal ball and would say, Yep! that'll be it. Then, I'm through now. I'm done.
The opposite of love is not hate....it's apathy. When one no longer cares....I mean really does NOT care...that is worse than any other expression.
Holtz is killing Tech Football slowly, strangling it, and is doing lasting damage, far worse! than a string of 3-9, 4-8...and then 9-5, 10-4, and oh my! 12-2, back to 4-8 two years later under another coach. At least, that's how I see it. And apparently I'm not alone.
Let me add this..
The best case scenario would be Tech "suffers" a down year going 7-5 and bowling in some minor bowl, but these down years are a build up toward a 12-win season, a Top 25 ranking, and, yes, every now and then, garnering a NY6 bowl berth. None of us would complain about 7-5 if it were truly a rebuilding year after a great double-digit-win season. But...that's not what we're getting under Holtz. Will we...ever?
No. I didn't buy the #25 BS we used to pump up many of our fans who thought Navy was actually ranked. It was a good win. Nothing great.
No. I didn't get all giddy over last year's win against an unmotivated and uncoached team.
Yes, I'll be upset if we win in perhaps the most difficult G5 venue in the country CONSIDERING what we did in the last two games of this season.
You question the legitimacy of this bowl? The Hawaii Bowl was created because a 9-3 Hawaiian team which defeated, no crushed, #9 BYU and defeated #18 Fresno St. received no bowl bid. We lost to Boise St. by a touch down and didn't play La Tech that year. La Tech won the WAC. How wacky is that?!!! If we had played you that year...we would've owned you. The bowl has always been broadcast by ESPN. This bowl isn't good enough for you?!!!! Come on Man...this bowl was made for the likes of us.
Michigan State is the only team to pay us $250,000 to not play us at Hawaii. We regularly play Big 10 and Pac 12 teams which usually whip us at home. They never...with the exception of MSU...complain that Hawaii isn't neutral. Heck, we've been beaten soundly by FCS (Div II) teams in our house.
My one criticism of La Tech is its obsession with the sons of SEC and other big name coaches. How can one university have two sons of SEC coaches and a Holtz lead them to a championship? They didn't and that's expected. At best, they are only treating your formerly div II school as a stepping stone.
Look, we're made of the some stuff. I'm equally sorry the WAC dissolved. Our current head coach was the quarterback in 2001. Yeah, this game means something.
It's only a "bowl" if it's a neutral site for BOTH teams. Otherwise, it's nothing but a home/road game.
The Independence Bowl was created, and first played in 1976, thus its name, because Arkansas State went 11-0, was champion of the old Southland Conference, back when it was as much "division 1" as any other conference, and they got left at home. That was 1975. So, Shreveport, sitting in the middle of SLC country (Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas) created the I-Bowl. McNeese State and Tech were the only SLC teams that ever played in the I-Bowl under those tie-ins. Opponents included Syracuse and Louisville.
But the Hawaii Bowl was created, not to give a conference champ a home, but to give a school a home to bowl. Fine, great, more power to ya! But save the BS for others who might fall for it. It's a home-road game, period. It is what it is.
