Lots of pay difference is right!

The 30th pick in last year's draft got a $9.86 million contract with $8.69 million in guaranteed money.

The 50th pick in last year's draft got a $5.49 million contract with a $3.28 million in guaranteed money.

The 85th pick in the draft got a $3.45 million contract but just $848,000 in guaranteed money.

And what's crazy is the three players drafted in those positions could all play the same position on the field and the guy picked 85th may have the best professional career. For all the millions teams spend on analysis of players, it is largely still a guessing game.

Hate that the Bengals took a QB to start the 4th round. Doesn't sound positive for JD.

Driskel played well last year when that overrated red head QB got hurt again. He can hold his own in a QB battle.

I also noticed that the Patriots traded up to draft a punter. I know Ryan Allen was a very middle-of-the-road punter last regular season, but was very good in the Super Bowl. Yet the Patriots only signed him to a one year contract in the off season and then drafted a punter. His signing bonus was only $100k. Is Belichick about to give Allen the boot?

The Pats are great at letting players go just as they're able to demand higher salaries. Didn't something similar happen when Ryan got the job? Decent punter already on the team, but coming off of his rookie deal?

This is actually his third contract, but you are right about Belichick saving money where he can. Plus I also read where he changed agents right before getting this deal. Of Course he has already been paid $7.7 million so far. He should be good.

It's got to do with minimum salaries after a certain number of years. A friend of mine's son played seven years for the Seahawks as a backup TE and special teams player. He was cut due to the fact that his minimum salary would be too high as an 8th year player. He was replaced by a rookie making the league minimum. Sounds like the same thing may be about to happen to Ryan.

Yes. That's exactly what happened. The Pats already had arguably one of the better punters in the NFL when Ryan Allen arrived in 2013.

    Here's what wikipedia says:

    2013 preseason

Meskó was fighting for the punter position with undrafted rookie Ryan Allen. Meskó did not survive the final cuts. Bleacher Report stated that the reason for the cut was that if Meskó had stayed for his fourth year, he would have made $1.3 million, while Allen would only cost $405,000

Just to finish up, Ryan Allen's 2019 contract will pay him about $1.55M. He signed a 3-year contract extension worth $6.1 million with the Patriots on July 24, 2015. The contract contains $3 million fully guaranteed upon signing. Per ESPN's Field Yates, Allen received a $2 million signing bonus and a $1 million guarantee on his 2016 salary. Allen can earn up to $200,000 in yearly roster bonuses which are paid for each week Ryan is active. There are $50,000 incentives in each year of the contract for selection to the Pro Bowl.

Ryan's contract compensation is around $1.5 million this year. Don't know what a 5th round draft choice is slotted to be paid, but the money savings certainly would be less than $1 million. I would think that a tie in terms of preseason performance would still go to Ryan.
