Old article, not sure if it's accurate
Scholarship Rules
The NCAA has two basic scholarship limits: a limit on counters and a limit on equivalencies. It’s a bit circular, but a counter is a student-athlete who counts against scholarship limits. In equivalency sports, the scholarship limit is based on the total amount of athletic scholarships awarded to counters. In football, there is not just a limit on 85 scholarships per year, but also a limit on initial counters, that is athletes who are on scholarship for the first time. Initial counters are capped at 25.
Counters are normally any student-athlete who receives an athletic scholarship, partial or full. But in sports like football and basketball, counters also include any student-athlete who was recruited and who receives financial aid from the school. This is to prevent abuse by schools who might have “walk-ons” who were recruited then given “non-athletic” scholarships from the financial aid office.
My next question...
Why did we only have 10 on the roster at the start of the season?
12 not 10. 11 active and 1 transfer that had to sit out this year, but Ledoux is the kind of transfer you want (like Erik McCree was worth only having 12 scholarship players that year). Our 13th scholarship player couldn't make grades and left the program before the Fall Quarter. Kyle not panning out and two injuries leaves us at 8 with one of those 8 being a true freshman that probably needed to RS.
Kyle didn’t pan out last year, and should have been transferred out or taken off scholly.
Ledoux will definitely be an asset next year, but we still need a big.
I thought the two injuries saved Konkol’s job this year because he has an excuse built in. Next year if he’s not in the NIT at MINIMUM he should be fired after the season is over.
Konkol should be fired tonight. His team shot 38.5% from the free throw line tonight. Obviously, this is a team that's getting ZERO COACHING when it comes to free throws. If I was Les Guice or T-Mac, Konkol would be hitch hiking back to Ruston tonight to clean out his office.
I said early in the season, if our record was the same or worse than last year, and especially if we also got embarrassed in the tournament, it would be time for Konkol to leave.
We got 20 wins. We played hard both tournament games, won the first and surely didn't embarrass ourselves last night. It kills me that we lost because of freaking free-throws, but I'm pretty sure ODU is glad they don't have to play us again. I won't be surprised if last night turns out to be the toughest game ODU plays on the way to the championship. (Watch them lose by 20 today )
I agree with Dixonfor 6. Konkol earned one more year in my book. But we have to be a whole lot better. And not have just one conference road win.
Konkol didn’t “earn” anything this year.
Some of those 20 wins came from schools like tongaloo. We lost horrible games versus bottom dwellers Rice and FIU! His big man recruit apparently can’t actually play basketball. This team as someone else says is completely devoid of shooters and is atrocious from the FT line. (This last game was not the only one lost due to FTs)
Konkol “lucked” into having an injury excuse for the season, but damn even Shaq was a better FT shooter than 38%.
