John Thompson?
Don’t think so. But I am asking. My recollection is 94-95 was bad. I thought Thompson was good
John Thompson went to our daddy in 1992.
1993 was the worst of the worst for Tech Athletics. 2-9 in football and 2-25 in MBB. Dan Reneau...
Art Kaufman in 1994. Pete Fredenburg in 1995.
As far as the 90s are concerned...
John Thompson was the DC in 1990 and 1991 before leaving for USM. Ark Kaufmann was the DC ifrom 92-94 and was the DC for the 1992 team that was second in the nation in total defense for much of that season. He left to become DC at Ole Miss. Pete Fredenburg took over as DC in 1995 and 1996. Crowton replaced him with Todd Bradford for the 97 and 98 seasons. Bradford was let go after the debacle at Tulane at the end of the 98 season. Tom Masella was the DC from 99 to 01. Masella ran the 3-4, the first time we had run it at Tech in the I-A/FBS era.
I was 7 during the 1992 season, but two of the most memorable games that I have ever been to happened during that season. The first game in Waco when Chris Boniol kicked a 30 yard FG as time expired to win 10-9. Honestly, one of the things I remember most about that game was Mickey Slaughter. The cheerleaders would start cheering, then he would drown them out with his loud, deep voice "Here We Go Bulldogs...", and the cheerleaders would have to match him and start doing that cheer.
Also, the game vs National Champion Alabama when we held them to their lowest point total of the season, and the game that basically made Willie Roaf a first round draft choice. (Where DawgPix took one of his most iconic pictures.)
I was 15 during this season. I skipped the Baylor game to see Guns N Roses & Metallica at Texas Stadium. I still remember my dad picking me up for the concert with the excitement from the Boniol kick.
I also missed the Colorado State game in 1990 because I was on a school trip to DC/Philly/NYC. I called my dad collect from a pay phone to find out about the game!
Bradford is the one who quit from Kansas a couple of years back to get into the oil biz, right?
Masella still coaching bulldogs, just doing it in Rhode Island now.
Been going to games since 1965 .
I’m almost certain that JThompson was the DC on that great ‘92 defense and not Kaufman
