    UL Means University of Lafayette?

Just as Memphis State changed its name to University of Memphis, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette seems to have changed its name to “University of Lafayette” by using “UL” since the University of Louisiana System bylaws prohibits any System campus from abbreviating University of Louisiana as “UL” as without the geographic location:

“C. The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, “UL,” and/or the phrase “U of L” are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations (alumni associations, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the municipal location of the institution. For example, ULR is appropriate for University of Louisiana at Rayne.

‘D. All uses of the name “University of Louisiana” must be followed by the word “at” and the institution’s geographic location. No typographic variations within the name are permitted. The word “at” must be no less than 50% and the geographic location must not exceed 100% nor be less than 80% of the University of Louisiana name. Any institutional use of “University of Louisiana” without the “at” and geographic location is prohibited.”

Re: UL Means University of Lafayette?

Some people are now using UL, and some Louisiana, while many others use ULL, Louisiana Lafayette, and even UL-LAF. Louisiana at Lafayette has created a very confusing brand identity situation for itself.

Now ULL's administration is even considering changing their mascot. Years ago, the people in charge down there were so uncreative that, even though La Tech was already known as the Bulldogs, they settled on a bulldog as the mascot for USL. They've since changed to Ragin Cajuns, but they've struggled to find a suitable mascot. Everything from a "Cajun Man" (currently used by Nichols State), a "Gator" (used by Florida), and a "Blue Tick Hound" (almost exactly what Tennessee uses) and even a "Chicken" is being considered as their new mascot. (FYI, if you've never treated yourself to watching the "Cajun chicken dance" video on you-tube, it's very entertaining to watch). Who knows, or better yet, who cares what they'll settle on.

All of this aside, the fans in Lafayette consider the battle over their name over, and they consider themselves the victors in the name battle.

I still refer to them as ULL whenever I'm over there just to piss them off. They try to correct me to say UL, but I always tell them that I'll just continue to use their ACTUAL name until it changes. The fact remains that ULL is, and will remain in a constant identity crisis. They have to deal with the fact that Lafayette University exists. They call their football stadium "the swamp", which the University of Florida practically OWNS, just as they do the "Gators".

They ought to just change their mascot to the Tigers and be done with it.

Monroe needs to grow a backbone and make them comply. That is the only thing that will matter.

The next time they say UL ask them if they are the ones in Monroe.

I've mentioned this before and to this day - In Atlanta, all people know is LSU and many of them kind of know Louisiana Tech or La Tech. But when they sometimes ask 'aren't we playing ya'll and I have to tell them no you are either playing ULM or ULL. Then they have to ask 'which ones are the Cajuns?'

And they will briefly get confused with the two schools and I will do my best to start explaining why they are that now only to see an Eye-roll about 10-20 seconds into the story and I go 'Yep, it's stupid.'

In the middle of the day on May 20, 2019, you're worried about posting on another school's message board to defend your school's ongoing identity crisis. Do we eat at you 24/7 and 365 days a year?

Our young people in Louisiana, including Tech, ulm, and lsu students, call them UL.

Never heard a single leader of a university or a state rep denounce them being called UL.

    It's done.
