So do we recognize Taiwan (the Republic of China) as a sovereign nation, or do we maintain they are part of the one China ruled by the CCP (People's Republic of China)? This seems like ticking time bomb to me.

Chicoms getting bolder and are gaining ground around the world. The Chicoms published their master plan years ago, seeing no reason to keep it secret. They have stated their ultimate goal is total world domination and have set target dates for advancing their influence/hegemony.
This week a Chicom military vessel, an electronic surveillance ship, made a port-of-call in Sri Lanka, over profound objections from India, and a very weak "objection" from the flailing US government. This is largely India's problem given the proximity of Sri Lanka to India and how India has been trying to aid the bankrupt island nation with financial assistance and military handouts too. Sri Lanka did delay the acceptance of the visit which pissed off the Chicoms who made some thinly veiled threats against it and against India as well. Sri Lanka finally agreed to the visit then rolled out the red carpet in an official welcoming ceremony. This might appear to be a minor event and can be if India is able to deny the Chicoms a foothold on Sri Lanka. But this is exactly the MO of the Chicoms they have employed in Africa and South America.
Back in 2020, Trump's last year in office, the world had rallied around the US-led effort to contain China such that the Chicoms had recalled most of their navy, including all of their deep-water subs, to their territorial waters. Now a mere 18 months later they are all over the world, establishing agreements with frightened, weak governments who have lost confidence in the Bidenish US to protect them. So, some nations feel they have no choice, for self-preservation, but to open relations with China.
The amount of damage this puppet moron is doing to the US and the free world is incredible and will take a decade, at least, to reverse, provided it won't be too late.
Japan is building a battlecruiser, a 20,000+ ton ship which will carry the Aegis missile system, some rapid-firing guns, and have 288 missile silos with a variety of missile types and warheads. Japan is also converting two helicopter carriers to aircraft carriers, to carry the F-35 vertical takeoff jets. The Japs are also considering placing two Aegis missile systems, one at each end of their island nation, on shore, land-based. All of this because of the Chicom threat.

Neither The Pope nor the Catholic Church needs the Chicoms' money. So, no, not another "bought and paid for leading figure." If I have the time, and desire, maybe I'll try to explain the reasoning behind the decision.
