    Charges against the Security Officer

Criminal charges filed against that Peterson fellow, the one at Parkland High School, Florida, for failure to stop the shooter.

Fire him? Sure! But criminal charges that could result in a life sentence, since it could be 93 years and he is close to 60? Seems a bit over the top. It was said there are no laws on the books in Florida that require law enforcement officers to risk their lives...ever! Probably an emotional local jury will convict him but a sane appeals court will overturn the conviction and release him.

Because...what's next? Think of the slippery slope this could be. File negligent homicide charges against firemen who don't enter burning buildings about to collapse and people were still alive inside?

Let me be clear, I am not defending Peterson, because I personally think he could have/should have done more. So, fire him. But murder charges?

Are the charges just based on his failure to act? I assumed they were something else uncovered during the investigation, but this makes more sense. As much as I loathe this POS, I agree with you that this is probably excessive.

You could say he voluntarily, by doing nothing, contributed to the death of several students. He was hired to protect the students and he cowardly ran the other way. I hope he does prison time. You have to be the ultimate coward to run away when children are being killed.

So is being a "coward" a crime?

I'm just asking, for argument sake...

It shouldn't be and he shouldn't be a police officer if he is a coward. The wrench in this situation is the reports that he actively discouraged other officers from doing the job he was seemingly too afraid to do. That's the part that probably should get him in hot water.

In some cases yes. Remember Private Slovik? He was executed for desertion from a combat unit.

The real crime here is this "resource officer" is retired at 55 years old and is receiving $104,424 per year in pension payments. WTF.
