Thoughts?
I like my Weatherby in 6.5 Creedmoor...it's an easy shoot!
I'm an asshole! What's your excuse?
How old is jr?
Are those the only options you would consider?
What do you plan to hunt?
Deer, coyotes and bobcats when necessary. he is 10. Those were 2 rifles that met my price point. I have a Browning and a Remington myself. My bro in law got the Weatherby Vanguard Compact in 6.5 for his boy. My brother got the Savage Axis in 7mm-08 for his son.
Had a savage weather warrior and it had the best trigger I’ve ever had.
Are you familiar with 6.5 Grendel?
Howa, CZ and Ruger now offer bolt guns.
The Grendel offers plenty of punch for everything you mentioned and will do it with less recoil. I ditched my magnums about 8 years ago and don’t regret it. You don’t need cannons to kill deer.
I had not considered Howa or Tikka either, but may throw them in the mix. I agree about not having to use a cannon. I have a 30-06 and a .270 short mag. I love both and can hunt any game with either. But holy cow, it hurts to go to the range and go throw a box of rounds. That is why I was considering the Creedmoor. Hadn’t seen the Grendel round until you mentioned it. Possibilities abound.
Ruger makes great firearms as well. Completely forgot about that option.
IMO, and if the shooter is capable the Grendel is an adequate hunting round out to 400 yds. I have taken a whitetail at 323 yds and a coyote at 367 yds with mine. My longest target shots are at 685 yds using the same round I hunt with. 100 grain nosler ballistic tip. The 100 gr. Bullet is running out of gas at that point.
If I wanted a bit more than the Grendel , I would consider the Creedmore.
I’m just leary of over gunning young shootets
Love a Savage rifle and the 7mm-08 is good for children or small adults.
Ended up with a Mossberg Patriot Compact in the 6.5 Creedmoor. Has stock extensions to grow with him. Will eventually replace the optics when he is comfortable at longer ranges.
