Hall of Fame: Joe Raymond Peace - latechsports.com

A new article has been posted on www.latechsports.com:

When Joe Raymond Peace received the call this spring informing him he was going into the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame, it was, he said, "totally unexpected." The former head football coach, who led the Bulldogs into Division I in 1988, didn't really know what to think.

Great article, my favorite time as a Bulldog fan was when Coach Peace was there. We may not have won every game but we certainly came to play and didn't back down from anyone.

I agree. There were three years during Peace’s stint when I went to every game, home and away.

He had some good coaches, just couldn’t afford to keep them - John Thompson, Steve Ensminger, and Petey Perot are three that come to mind. Bill Johnson was also here at least a year during that period. And he also hired Crowton.

I think I would have liked playing for Coach Peace. He's cut from the same cloth as other coaches I did have the privilege to play for. He had assembled a pretty good staff too.

I think he would have had some great seasons if he could have kept that staff together. Of course with our budget that was just not possible.

We could sure use a man like him on the sideline right now!

    Thanks for the memories Coach!

I was out there to take the goal post down, let me tell you it was a terrifying moment. The upright broke loose from the cross bar and hit one guy right in the head. Epic fun though. Love seeing Coach Peace carried off at the end.

    Great article..

a friend in Austin and I were discussing those coaches who "know how to get it out of them", meaning they know how to get their players to play above their perceived ability. Aren't the best coaches the ones who know how to "get it out of them"?

JRP is one of those coaches FOR SURE.

We all knew the games were pretty special when he was there. Looking back, they were even better and greater than we realized. I guess it has gotten stated so much over the decades that people just don't pay attention to it anymore but "attitude" really makes up for a lot.

Swagger. We had it under JRP. We miss it now.

I know JRP’s Dad is in the La. Sports HoF but is he also in the Tech HoF?

Classy guy who loves Tech and Ruston. Very happy for him. Can you imagine Skip playing some of the schedules JRP had to deal with while mking the transition to the "big time'.

Not me! I was happy to watch from the relative safety of the stands...south 40, east side.

I don't know how many people were there, 15,000? A few more? But, it doesn't matter if you were one of those present. As Nitz says in the opener of the TV show "some people are calling this the most important home game in Tech history." There was a hype before the game...before the days of the Internet and forums like this...yet word spread. Well, if you were a true blue Tech fan you already knew the importance of the game. What I remember the most amongst we fans who stand the whole game was a prevailing attitude of "refuse to lose." When we fell behind 30-14, fans all around me were saying, "No! we cannot lose this game...we will NOT lose this game!" And the cheers of encouragement for the Dawgs to come back. I don't know how much influence that had on the team, the players and coaches, who had their own "refuse to lose" thingy going. I do remember our very own Scott Collis saying afterwards, "Did you hear that crowd out there!?" I hope we helped, even a little.

Listen to Nitz's voice crack with emotion when Bobby Slaughter hauled in the go-ahead TD. Tell me Tech Nation was not "all in" for that game.

Mostly, Coach Peace was responsible for building something special. Thanks Coach!!
