    Re: Week 5

At SMU Chad Morris was making around $2M/yr. Dykes is likely making that much or more so there is no comparison to us and SMU. Is SMU also a mid-major?

Our roller coaster has not been a bad ride for the past 7 years. Consider that the last "smooth ride" we had was with Jack Bicknell who we had for 8 years. Our problem is that we have gained "stuff", but we've lost substance which includes tradition and game day atmosphere. If we had true leadership in athletics we'd be growing rather than going down. Only an SLC AD could screw up a sure thing.

I do agree that our lack of leadership has killed what we had going, for MBB and football at least.

SMU is not a midmajor because that only exists in the mind of TMac

As you know, those are the only two sports that actually help prop up our budget. Our AD says we do pretty good compared to other mid majors like UL, ULM, McNeese, NSU, and Grambling.

How can we monetize the use of the made up term mid major by our coaches and admin? We could bank roll that I bet.

Maybe we can double down on using Learfield's nasaly gay voice actor guy who says, "Go Dahgs!" 10 times each game. Our marketing people seem to think he is the greatest.

"Don't forget come support your Dahg's as they take on fellow mid-major, UMass on October..."

Our attendance has everything to do with what we are putting on the field. We win the games that we should win and lose the ones we are picked to lose. However, it isn't even about winning and losing this time. It is about how un-exciting our offense is on the field. A high flyings offense is needed, if you are a G5 team to get people excited. The fans have to "think" there is a chance to beat every single team in the country. Say what you want about Dykes, but he knew how to do that. Win big/lose big, but there was always a chance to pull it off. Exciting football is gone at Tech..... We don't need to change conferences - there is no need to step backward during this time. We have to hold on and hope that the administration wises up at some point and we can use our current position as a placeholder until we come back. That is my hope, anyway.

Exactly. With Peace, Crowton and Dykes, I always felt like Tech had a chance in every game they played regardless of the opponent. With Holtz, I always expect us to lose a game or two we should win.

Are they happy and there? It's looked empty at both home games.

Leadership really does matter. And Tech’s lack of it is becoming increasingly obvious. We are are on a gradual decline. You can see it in the stands and feel it on the field. There is a big disconnect between the Tech fans and the university’s leaders. To us the product and persona of the team matters. To leadership it’s mostly about cruise control, play it safe on let the mediocre resumes roll on.

To me it seems like Holtz is the exact opposite of what a head coach is. I don’t think he delegates coaching responsibilities and decision making to his assistants, I think he overrules them, simplifies and minimizes everything they want to do. I say this because everything Tech does is tier one simplistic. There’s no way offense, defense and special teams can all be equally elementary unless someone has a tight hold on the reigns to make it that way. Our players are way more capable than the coaching-up they’re getting. From what I see on the field I think our guys are bored. Sort of like the rest of us.

Attendance is declining all over the country. TV has made actually going to a game a lot less appealing. All those TV timeouts make the games too damn long for those sitting in the stadium. Watching the ice cream cone race the blizzard for the umpteenth time just doesn't do it for most of us.

When TV ratings drop and every game played is no longer on some sort of TV, this trend might change, but until that happens, I look for attendance to continue to drop.

Yes, TV and streaming is a problem for us.

We have other problems related to game day activities. Our leaders tried to fix what was not broken and took away tradition from long time fans in favor of parking lot spots that are not being used. We have the City of Ruston going all in for Tech Athletics while Tech Athletics is going all in for a few hundred fans. That's okay though. Those few hundred fans are all excited about squeaking out wins over Grambling and Rice while kissing our AD and HC's butt.

I agree 100%. The NFL is also losing it's attendance and audience in big numbers.

Just saw that NFL TV viewership has bounced back...a little...in comparison to last year. But attendance numbers have slid a little more.

And this nonsense in California...what am I saying!!!!??? California = nonsense!... has no, none, zero, nada legal bearing on players being able to make money. College athletes in California, in any state, do not need the state's permission to get paid to make a commercial. But, the NCAA will frown on it big time. Now, the institutions in CA, USC, UCLA, Fresneck, et al can choose to leave the NCAA, but that will crush their athletic departments and cause the athletes to go to schools out of state.

What this whole "players should be paid" nonsense has done, and is doing, is continue to drive casual fans away.

Many think this California ruling could lead to the death of college football. Inevitably, there will be competitive imbalances created that the NCAA just can't police. The high profile players at USC, etc....will undoubtedly have more income opportunities than players at Nebraska or Utah, for example. According to many, it just won't work. Even the professional leagues (NBA, NFL, etc...) have a hard time keeping their small markets competitive with the larger ones. The NCAA cannot manage this. So, I expect the NCAA will eventually dissolve, and it will be every man (or school) for himself.
